Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat clinched their third straight Atlantic Division title and the top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 93-79 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Miami (33-16) will host either the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks or New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs this weekend.

"I feel very good about accomplishing (three straight division titles)," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "I don't think anybody really talked about the Miami Heat being the best team in the Eastern Conference when the lockout ended. There were three or four teams ahead of us in the minds of a lot of people."

Tim Hardaway scored eight of his 15 points and drained two 3-pointers in an 18-7 third-quarter run, which ended with Dan Majerle making two 3-pointers and the Heat on top, 67-56.

The Heat led 69-61 entering the fourth quarter, scored the first seven points of the period and did not allow the Hawks closer than eight points thereafter.

Jamal Mashburn scored 18 points and P.J. Brown added 16 for Miami, which has won two straight and concludes the regular season Wednesday in New York.

"We did what we had to do over the past week or so," Riley added. "We faced a lot of adversity and we talked about reconnecting. Right now I think the mood is very good and we're going into the playoffs with a good attitude."

"We don't want to be playing for the championship on somebody else's home court," Brown said. "We wanted to wrap it up tonight. It's locked up and nobody can take it from us."

Steve Smith scored 21 points and Grant Long had 17 and eight rebounds for the Hawks, who managed just 53 points over the final three quarters.

"We came out and didn't play very well in the second half," said Smith. "We were missing a few bodies in Tyrone (Corbin) and Alan (Henderson), but we don't want to use that as an excuse."

Corbin has a blowout fracture of his left eye socket and Henderson is sidelined with an eye contusion.

The Hawks (30-19) host the Washington Wizards on Wednesday and will clinch fourth place in the East and the home-court edge in the first round with a win.

Miami used the 18-7 spurt to take control after the teams were locked in a 45-45 halftime tie. A short jumper by Brown just under three minutes into the third period forced a 49-49 deadlock and the Heat took the lead for good moments later when Hardaway hit a 19-footer from the right corner.

A 3-pointer by Hardaway with 5:24 left pushed Miami's advantage to 61-52. Smith made two free throws, but Majerle drained a 3-pointer. After a bucket by Atlanta rookie Roshown MacLeod, Majerle was good again from beyond the arc to make it an 11-point contest.

"I thought we played pretty well in the first half but then we let the game get ahead of us," said Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens. "We started to rush and our shot selection wasn't good."

Clarence Weatherspoon scored 13 points off the bench and Alonzo Mourning added 10 and nine rebounds for Miami, which shot 45 percent (34-of-76) from the field, including 8-of-21 from 3-point range. Brown also grabbed nine boards as the Heat held a 41-32 rebounding advantage.

Jamal Mashburn opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and layup around a dunk by teammate Duane Causwell that made it 76-61 with 9:04 left. The Heat were never again seriously challenged.

"Our defense has been the backbone of our team the whole season, it has always been that way," Mourning said. "We know what we are capable of doing defensively. We use that as a strength when teams are going well offensively."

Mookie Blaylock had 14 points and seven assists for the Hawks, who connected on 37 percent (24-of-65) and were 26-of-36 from the line.
