Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Finding themselves in the rare position of having nothing to play for but pride, the Seattle SuperSonics exhibited some in their final home game.

Gary Payton scored 24 points and rookie Vladimir Stepania posted season highs of 17 and 10 rebounds as the SuperSonics continued their mastery of the Dallas Mavericks with a 110-100 victory.

Seattle, which will finish its first non-playoff season since 1990 at the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, completed the home portion of their schedule at 17-8 and drew a standing ovation from their faithful fans at the game's conclusion.

"It was a nice professional effort," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "It's not easy to get up for a game when you're not in the playoffs. But the guys decided that it was important to come out and put on a good performance."

Payton, who has had another excellent season despite his team's woes, was 10-of-15 from the field. He released some frustration by earning an ejection after arguing with an official with 2:16 to play. Stepania was 5-of-8 from the floor and 7-of-11 at the line.

"It's amazing to me how far Vladimir has come," Westphal added. "From a foreign country, not really speaking the language very well, not understanding the referees or the opposition, let alone the coaching staff or teammates. He couldn't have done this, played a full game without fouling out (earlier in the season)."

The Sonics will need a victory in their final contest to avoid finishing below .500 for the first time since the 1986-87 campaign, when they were 39-43.

Don MacLean scored 18 points and rookie Jelani McCoy added a season-high 14 off the bench for Seattle, which completed a series sweep of Dallas and has taken 26 of the last 32 meetings.

Michael Finley scored 34 points and Shawn Bradley added 17 and 15 rebounds for Dallas, which ended the season by dropping consecutive contests after a season-high four-game winning streak.

Dallas' 19-31 finish is a vast improvement over last season, when the Mavericks went 20-62.

Vin Baker had 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Seattle, which shot 53 percent (38-of-72) and held a 47-37 advantage on the boards.

Hubert Davis scored 21 points and Erick Stickland added 11 off the bench for Dallas, which shot 41 percent (36-of-88) and forced 18 turnovers.

The Mavericks were competitive early and took an 18-17 lead on Davis' 22-footer from the right sideline with 6:02 remaining in the first quarter. But the Sonics closed the period with a 21-9 run to open a 38-27 cushion.

"It was a real tough first half for me because I didn't think that we played with the energy that we needed in our last outing," Dallas coach Don Nelson said.

Stepania gave Seattle its biggest lead when he buried a 19-footer with 10:10 left in the third quarter that made it 65-51.

"I believe in myself now," Stepania said. "I believe in my shot, my passes and I believe in my teammates. I'm very disappointed that we didn't make the playoffs, but that's life."

Davis responded with a 3-pointer and rookie Dirk Nowitzki and Finley made back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to seven.

Payton made a driving layup and MacLean buried a short hook shot with 7:16 left to make it 69-58.
