Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Don MacLean scored a season-high 26 points and Detlef Schrempf added 21 as the Seattle SuperSonics defeated the Los Angeles Clippers for the eighth straight time, 107-105, in the season finale for both squads.

Seattle (25-25) avoided its first losing season since 1986-87 but went without a winning record for the first time in eight years and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1990. The Clippers lost its sixth straight game in the final contest at the Los Angeles Sports Arena and finish the season 9-41.

Eric Piatkowski drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 105 with 11 seconds left. Seattle chose not to call timeout as Schrempf drove the ball upcourt and was fouled by rookie Tyrone Nesby at the top of the key. Schrempf drilled both free throws with 4.5 seconds left, putting the Sonics ahead, 107-105.

The Clippers had a chance to tie but a runner by Troy Hudson bounced off the rim as time expired. They have not defeated the Sonics since January 23, 1997.

Vin Baker grabbed 11 rebounds and Detlef Schrempf had 10 helping the Sonics outrebound the Clippers 51-35. Seattle has won two straight after alternating wins and losses the last six contests.

"Before the game, I told the team I wished the season wasn't 50 games long," Sonics first-year coach Paul Westphal said. "I wished there were 32 more because we were starting to play so well. It was a bitter pill not making the playoffs, but we have to use that to improve on next year."

"We (never) want to be in the position of not making the playoffs again," Baker said. "I'm sure we'll make some moves in the offseason so we'll get better. We've got the nucleus. The rest is work."

The loss offset an outstanding performance by Nesby, who scored a career-high 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting. Maurice Taylor added 20 and Hudson netted 19 and grabbed 10 rebounds.

"(The guys) played through adversity all year long," Clippers first-year coach Chris Ford said. "But the bottom line is always winning in this league and we didn't. We need to have somebody set the tone for the young guys."

"We have great young talent," Taylor said. "Before this year, no one knew who Hudson or Nebsy were. Now they are starting and are playing great for us. Next year I'm going to work hard. I want to play great and make the All-Star team."

Nesby scored 17 points, giving Los Angeles a 53-52 halftime lead. MacLean led the Sonics with 12.

Seattle used an 11-1 spurt to gain a 75-63 advantage with 2:59 left in the third quarter as Schrempf and Baker each netted four points in the run. The Sonics grabbed an 83-67 lead with 66 seconds left on a dunk by MacLean.
