Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley shook off a sore heel and scored 26 points as the Dallas Mavericks opened the season with a 108-96 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Finley missed the last five games of the preseason but was healthy enough to hit consecutive jumpers in the fourth quarter as Dallas opened a 97-89 lead with four minutes left.

Cedric Ceballos added 27 points off the bench for the Mavericks, who never trailed. Reserve guard Hubert Davis followed Finley's jumpers with a 3-pointer, building the team's first 10-point lead with two minutes left.

"The starters got the momentum going and the guys off the bench kept it going," Finley said. "When you've got that kind of continuity going from players 1 through 12, it's going to be tough to lose."

Erick Strickland and Robert Pack scored 12 points apiece for Dallas, which is trying to improve on a 19-31 season and reach the playoffs for the first time since 1990.

"Michael and I, we talk a lot about keeping everyone else playing hard when they get the ball," Ceballos said. "We want them to all play at our level. They have to for us to win."

John Starks led the revamped Warriors with 20 points off the bench and Chris Mills added 18 in a starting role for Mookie Blaylock.

Golden State was to debut a new starting backcourt but Blaylock, acquired in the offseason from Atlanta, sat out with a strained calf. Rookie Vonteego Cummings scored 13 points in 38 minutes.

Adonal Foyle had two points in 14 minutes in a starting role for center Erick Dampier, who is out several weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

"We obviously missed Damp," Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We have to play better with who we have on the floor. They just exploited us."

Dallas featured a small lineup most of the way, playing 7-6 Shawn Bradley, 6-11 Sean Rooks and 6-10 Randell Jackson a total of 29 minutes.

"The Mavs are smaller, quicker guys," Carlesimo said. "You have to hurt them on the boards, which we were able to do. But we didn't take care of the ball or recognize traps. We couldn't guard Cedric and Michael, in particular. Their smaller, quicker people played better than our smaller, quicker people."

Finley played 43 minutes and shot 12-of-23 from the field with seven rebounds and four assists. He scored eight points in the fourth quarter, hitting a 16-footer from the left corner and a 15-footer from the right side for a 97-89 advantage.

"The smaller lineup was something coach (Don) Nelson tried at different points of the game," Finley said. "It gives us advantages at times both defensively and offensively and tonight we just made the most of it."

Ceballos, who re-signed with the team this summer, did most of his damage early, totaling 23 points in the first three quarters. But he put the exclamation mark on the win with an emphatic jam in the final 76 seconds.

"The rules changes put us in a better situation because we are active and we're moving," Ceballos said. "The teams that have the slow big guys can't keep up with us. We keep moving guys in and out and they get more tired."

The Warriors forged five ties, the last coming at 68-68 with four minutes left in the third quarter, and pulled within a basket with 7:06 to play. However, they missed 6-of-9 shots and committed five turnovers in the next 6 1/2 minutes.

Starks and Mills combined to shoot 14-of-26 from the field, but forwards Antawn Jamison, Cummings, Donyell Marshall and Terry Cummings went just 13-of-41. The team shot 41 percent (34-of-82) and committed 23 turnovers.

The Mavericks shot 46 percent (39-of-85), including 2-of-15 from 3-point range. They also were outrebounded 51-41 but hit 28-of-34 free throws.
