Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Rookie Lamar Odom gave Los Angeles Clippers fans a glimpse of good things to come at the brand new Staples Center. The Seattle SuperSonics christened the arena by handing the oft-floundering franchise another loss.

Odom had 30 points and 12 rebounds in his NBA debut. But new acquisiton Vernon Maxwell scored 29 points, including 11 straight in the fourth quarter, as the Sonics pulled away for a 104-92 season-opening triumph.

The 6-10, 220-pound Odom, the fourth overall pick in the 1999 draft out of Rhode Island, was 10-of-18 from the field, 8-of-15 the line and handed out three assists in 44 minutes.

"I'm not worried about Lamar Odom's performance, I'm worried about the Clippers performance," Odom said. "I don't care about my numbers. It's all about team. I'll take a bad game and a win anytime."

"Lamar has a lot of potential and wants to take on a lot of the team's responsibility," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "But as a team we have to remember that he is a rookie and we can't depend on him to do everything for us. We do not want to burn him out."

Unfortunately for the the Clippers, Maxwell, an 11-year veteran, nearly outscored Odom in only 28 minutes off the bench. The wily 6-4 guard scored 18 points during the second quarter as Seattle outscored Los Angeles, 37-26, during the period to pull ahead for good, 62-48.

"I'm just happy to be able to help out," Maxwell said. "It's so nice and easy with Gary (Payton) out there. We fit very well. Odom is an exceptionally young, strong player. He's going to be terrific and tough to match up with."

Maxwell, who was held scoreless in the first and third quarters, scored 11 straight points in the final period to make it 101-83 with 5:39 to play.

Gary Payton had 22 points and 13 assists for Seattle, which posted its ninth straight win over Los Angeles and 23rd in the last 24 meetings overall.

"We closed the (LA) Sports Arena with a win and we opened this arena with a win," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "The Clippers have a lot of talent, but so do we and I think we have a chance to win a lot of games.

"Gary Payton is a pro at the top of his game," he added. "He's a real fit with all the guys around him."

Vin Baker collected 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Sonics, who are hoping to rebound from their first non-playoff season in nine years.

The Clippers, who were a dismal 9-41 last year and missed the postseason for the fifth time in six seasons, did receive further hope for a brighter future. Center Michael Olowokandi, the top overall pick in the 1998 draft, was an interior force with 16 rebounds.

"We didn't want to start off like this but Payton controlled the whole tempo of the game," Odom said. "Every game is going to be a learning experience. Just being on the road with these guys is going to be a learning experience. But I just want to win. I kind of bleed inside when I lose."

Odom converted a three-point play after draining a running jumper with 11:18 to play, pulling Los Angeles within 88-78.

"Odom is a very talented guy," Westphal said. "He's probably the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year."

"Lamar is a tremendous, great player," Seattle guard Brent Barry added. "He has a quiet confidence about him that you love to see young players have."

Maxwell began his one-man show by hitting a 16-footer with 9:35 remaining. He added a technical free throw, back-to-back 3-pointers and a driving layup to put away the Clippers.

With the game out of reach, Odom continued to dazzle the crowd of 17,847 with a no-look behind-the-back pass to Derek Anderson for an emphatic slam with just over three minutes left.

Although the Clippers were unable to fill the 18,964-seat structure, they did draw their largest crowd since 18,300 fans filled the Pond in Anaheim when Los Angeles hosted Michael Jordan and the Bulls more than three years ago.

Anderson, acquired from Cleveland in an offseason deal, scored 19 points. Tyrone Nesby, last season's standout rookie, added 16 and Maurice Taylor 14 for Los Angeles, which shot 45 percent (35-of-78).

"We have a lot more talent this year," Taylor said. "Even thought it didn't go the way we wanted it in our first game, we do have a team that is going to be much stronger."

The Clippers yielded 25 points off 18 turnovers, while managing only six points off Seattle miscues.

The Sonics' big trade acquisition, Horace Grant, had 13 rebounds to go with six points and free agent forward Ruben Patterson started and had 12 points and nine boards.

Seattle shot 40 percent (37-of-93) and held a 53-45 advantage on the glass.
