Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Allan Houston scored 23 points and Latrell Sprewell collected all 19 of his in the second half as the New York Knicks pulled away from the Chicago Bulls, 84-74.

The once-heated rivalry has lost its luster since the breaking up of the six-time world champion Bulls. The first half was a bore as both teams plodded through poor shooting performances until New York took a 32-30 lead.

Houston was red-hot throughout, making 10-of-15 shots. Sprewell was 0-for-5 in the first half before he and his teammates found their touch after intermission. The explosive swingman was 8-of-12 from the floor in the second half as New York shot over 60 percent during the final two quarters.

"We picked up our energy level in the second half," Houston said. "That was the key for us. We knew we could play better. Spree got going and gave us a big lift. We then took off and didn't look back."

"I just couldn't get anything to fall in the first half," said Sprewell. "In the the third quarter it was very fun. I love to get fired up like that. Once I got a couple of shots to go down, I got more aggressive and started to attack the basket."

Larry Johnson had all 10 of his points in the first half for the defending Eastern Conference champions, who improved to 2-0 despite the absence of injured star center Patrick Ewing.

Marcus Camby grabbed nine rebounds for the Knicks, who held a commanding 49-32 advantage on the boards against the overmatched Bulls.

Dickey Simpkins scored 17 points and rookies and native New Yorkers Elton Brand and Ron Artest added 14 apiece for Chicago, which dropped its season opener for the third straight year.

"There was definitely a lot more intensity," Brand said. "We tried to win the game, but Sprewell took over."

Charlie Ward had nine points and nine assists for the Knicks, who shot 48 percent (36-of-76). The Bulls shot just 30 percent (21-of-69).

"We played really well in the second half," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We got on a great roll. Charlie did a great job of feeding Spree. He moved really well without the ball. That was the big difference in the game."

Toni Kukoc, one of the few holdovers from the Bulls' dynasty, was held to nine points and contributed to Chicago's dreadful shooting by making 1-of-14 shots in 38 minutes.

"It's always awful when you go 1-for-14," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We rely on Toni to make those shots. He has made those shots throughout his career and hope it will start again Friday night (against Miami). We certainly hope we will score more than (74) points."

Fred Hoiberg scored 11 points for Chicago, which committed only 10 turnovers but made just two baskets in the fourth quarter, including a meaningless 3-pointer by Artest in the closing seconds.

Johnson's tip-in at the halftime buzzer gave the Knicks the lead and ended a dismal shooting performance for both squads. New York was 14-of-40 and Chicago 9-of-33.

New York did not waste any time taking control in the third period. Sprewell came out firing, draining three straight jumpers to give the Knicks a 38-32 cushion with 10:40 left.

Chicago would not go away and pulled within 59-55 with 43 seconds left in the third quarter when Artest, whom the Knicks bypassed in the first round of the draft, hit a 3-pointer.

"It was nothing playing New York," Artest said. "I just wanted to win. I was a little nervous knowing my family was watching. But once I got going, I forgot about it."

Sprewell responded with a three-point play on a short jumper in the lane to give New York a 62-55 lead entering the fourth quarter.
