Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Damon Stoudamire got the Portland Trail Blazers off to a flying start in their home opener and newcomer Scottie Pippen finished off the Los Angeles Clippers.

Stoudamire scored 12 of his 23 points in the first quarter, Pippen had 16 of his 22 in the third period and the Trail Blazers roared to their second straight easy win, 121-98 over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Stoudamire shot 10-of-17 from the field and added nine assists. He set an early tone by pushing the tempo on both ends and knocking down jumpers to spread the court.

"It felt good, something that can set the tone for me for what's going to happen throughout the whole season," Stoudamire said. "My job is a lot easier on this team. I think everybody can see that. You can see that I am benefiting from the players we have."

Playing his first home game for his new team, Pippen helped turn an eight-point halftime lead in a 92-74 cushion late in the third quarter. He made 8-of-13 shots as Portland blazed away from the field at 61 percent (45-of-74).

"I thought I had a nice overall game," Pippen said. "It's not all about scoring."

Pippen provided a handful for Clippers rookie Lamar Odom, whose versatility recalls Pippen's skills at small forward. The 6-10 Odom, who scored 30 points in his NBA debut on Tuesday, added 23 but shot just 5-of-17 from the field.

"Scottie had a great third quarter offensively after playing a superb first half defensively and limiting Lamar Odom," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We ran a couple of plays for him to start the third quarter in order to not only get him more in the offensive flow but also to make Odom work a little harder on defense."

"I thought Lamar Odom played very well tonight," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "He's only a rookie, but he went up against some of the best players in the league."

Arvydas Sabonis had 16 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Blazers, who won by 20 points at Vancouver on Tuesday and host another overmatched opponent in Denver on Friday. Portland has won 11 of the last 12 meetings with Los Angeles and is 63-12 all-time at home against the Clippers.

"It seemed like the Clippers were in the game the whole time but when you look up at the score, we were winning by 20," Stoudamire said. "We did what we needed to do."

Although the Blazers never trailed, the teams split 12 points before Stoudamire took charge. He had six points, an assist and a steal in a 12-2 burst that gave Portland the lead for good.

His layup and jumper capped the run and provided an 18-8 lead with 6:50 remaining in the period. He closed the quarter with consecutive jumpers that kept the lead at 30-20.

Odom had two three-point plays, a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws in the second quarter. But his brilliance cut just two points off the deficit and the Blazers took a 59-51 lead to the locker room.

Pippen took charge in the third quarter. Working primarily against Odom, he made 6-of-7 shots. His three-point play and a free throw on the ensuing possession pushed the lead to 92-74 with 54 seconds left in the period.

"I was a little reluctant in the first half with my offense," Pippen said. "In the second half, I tried to be a little more aggressive. The opportunities came a little more plentiful in the second half for me as well."

Steve Smith scored 22 points and reserve guard Greg Anthony added 15 for the Blazers, who held a 41-29 rebounding edge. Maurice Taylor scored 22 points and Derek Anderson added 16 for the Clippers, who shot 45 percent (36-of-80).
