Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets delivered a statement to the Indiana Pacers that the balance of power in the Eastern Conference may be shifting south.

Eddie Jones had 22 points and a franchise-record nine steals and David Wesley added 17 points and seven assists as the Hornets opened a 20-point third-quarter lead en route to a 98-89 victory over the Pacers.

The quicker, more athletic Hornets had all five starters score in double figures in posting the first 2-0 start in franchise history.

"This is only the second game. We still have 80 to go," said Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "I liked our effort, we came out very focused. Everybody was serious tonight."

Reggie Miller scored 20 points and Al Harrington added 15 off the bench for Indiana (1-1), which committed 32 turnovers, four shy of the club record and the most ever by a Charlotte opponent.

"We got off to a good start but the shots stopped going in and obviously had too many turnovers," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "This team (Charlotte) is one of the best in the East and we had a chance to make a statement early in the season."

After Jalen Rose's 3-pointer cut Charlotte's lead to 67-55 with 7:06 left in the third quarter, the Hornets went on an 8-0 run. Mason nailed a 15-foot jumper and Jones and Wesley canned back-to-back 3-pointers as Charlotte extended its lead to 75-55 with three minutes remaining in the period. Indiana committed nine turnovers in the third quarter.

"You have to protect the ball, especially against a team that is going to overplay the ball a lot," Miller said. "They played more aggressively than us."

Elden Campbell scored six points and Wesley added five as Charlotte finished the first quarter with a 17-5 run for a 29-19 lead. Bobby Phills scored nine of his 16 points in the second quarter as Charlotte built its lead to 17 before finishing the half with a 59-46 lead. Jones had 14 points in the first half and forced three of Indiana's 18 turnovers with steals.

Mason had 12 points, 12 boards and five assists and Campbell and Derrick Coleman added 13 points.

The Hornets were outrebounded, 47-38, but held a 26-4 advantage in fast-break points and 46-26 in points in the paint. Charlotte had 20 steals, four off the club record, and scored 33 points off Indiana's turnovers.

Charlotte closed strongly last season but a loss to Indiana late in the season hurt its playoff chances. The Hornets are expected to challenge Indiana for the Central Division title this season.

"It's a little too early for that," Jones said. "We're confident we can play with anyone, score with anyone and shut anybody down. We have to work on getting our chemistry together."
