Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Vin Baker and Vernon Maxwell each scored 22 points as the Seattle SuperSonics posted a 106-96 victory over the Denver Nuggets in their home opener.

Baker was 11-of-22 from the field and grabbed 13 rebounds for the SuperSonics, who wore new garish red uniforms and have won 27 of their last 33 meetings with the Mavericks.

"I've worked hard," said Baker, who signed a seven-year, $86 million contract in the offseason that contains weight clauses. "I'm in shape and I expect myself to come out and play well."

Coming off a season in which it missed the playoffs for the first time in nine years, Seattle improved to 2-0. On Tuesday, the Sonics posted a 104-92 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in the first regular-season game at the Staples Center.

After signing a free agent contract in the offseason, Maxwell has scored 51 points in his first two games with Seattle, registering 29 in the win over the Clippers.

"Vernon's really a weapon," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "I mean, he's just amazing. He comes in and just energizes the team. We can ride him for a little while and it lets Gary (Payton) and Vin sit back and let somebody else create."

Ruben Patterson, another newcomer, chipped in with a career-high 17 points for the Sonics.

"I had fun out there tonight," Patterson said. "I was being very aggressive. I just stepped up and did my job. It's a good opportunity for me. All I want is a chance. I didn't get that with the Lakers last year."

Horace Grant grabbed 11 rebounds and Payton dished out 13 assists for Seattle, which built a 73-58 lead on Baker's dunk with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter.

Cedric Ceballos scored 34 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 15 for Dallas, which opened the season with a 108-96 victory over Golden State on Tuesday.

Seattle used a 12-2 run to take a 56-46 halftime lead before opening a 15-point cushion midway through the third quarter.

"It was a horrible end of the second period and beginning of the third period," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We buried ourselves. We did get back in it but it was an uphill battle."

Nursing an ankle injury, Michael Finley finished with 14 points for the Mavericks but scored just three points after the first period.

"I don't know if that was the reason but he wasn't playing well," said Nelson.

After Dallas pulled within five points early in the fourth period, Seattle used an 8-0 spurt and opened a 92-79 lead on Jelani McCoy's dunk with 8:40 remaining.

"I thought we met all the challenges we needed to," Westphal said. "We beat them on the boards and made them earn their shots. They were hitting some tough shots, I thought, and it seemed like they weren't going to miss. But in the end, it was a good routine win."

The Mavericks sliced the deficit to 92-84 on Ceballos' dunk with 7:31 to play but the Sonics put it away with an 8-2 run. Baker's dunk made it 100-86 with 5:20 to go.

"It's a good test," Ceballos said. "We played well. We hung in there and we had a great chance to win one but Gary took over, calmed his team down and got them in the right position."

The Sonics held a 22-8 edge on the offensive boards, helping them attempt 100 shots. Seattle shot just 42 percent from the field but outrebounded Dallas, 58-41, and converted 16 turnovers into 22 points.

Robert Pack dished out 11 assists for Dallas, which shot 47 percent (42-of-89).
