Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The last time the Houston Rockets were 0-3, they were beginning life without Moses Malone.

The Rockets fell to 0-3 for the first time since 1982 as they suffered a 95-85 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, who remained unbeaten with their effective inside-outside attack.

"Twin Towers" Tim Duncan and David Robinson had double-doubles and Terry Porter and Mario Elie made clutch 3-pointers down the stretch as the Spurs notched their fifth straight win over the Rockets.

Duncan had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Porter scored 18 points and Elie added 15, combining to make six 3-pointers.

"This is a great start for us," said Robinson, who collected 10 points and 11 rebounds. "This year could not have started better. We got our arena and we're 3-0 and we're not playing as good as we can play."

Houston still has superstars Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon but also has eight new players -- including rookie point guard Steve Francis -- and some chemistry problems.

"What's disappointing about this start is that we're making the same mistakes we're making in the preseason and the first two games," said Barkley, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds. "We're turning the ball over too much."

"It's not a good feeling to have lost our first three games," said Olajuwon, who had 13 points and eight rebounds. "What we've got to do to turn this around is execute better and raise our intensity, both individually and collectively."

In the summer of 1982, the Rockets elected not to match an offer sheet to Malone, the league's Most Valuable Player. Malone signed with Philadelphia and Houston received Caldwell Jones as compensation. The team lost its first 10 games en route to a 14-68 campaign. This squad isn't nearly that bad but is having its troubles.

"I still feel we've got good personnel but it's going to take time," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "This is a tough week for us but we're thrown into a hurricane with this schedule this first month. We've got to relax, stay positive and stay together."

Houston came apart down the stretch, allowing San Antonio to get loose for three 3-pointers in a decisive 12-5 run. The Rockets also shot just 15-of-23 from the line.

"Tonight we made the wrong rotation a few times and that was very costly," Tomjanovich said. "We also didn't make our free throws and that could have changed the whole psychology of the game."

A basket by Kelvin Cato pulled the Rockets within 78-77 with 8:24 to go, but Elie, a former Rocket, drilled a 3-pointer for a four-point lead. Cuttino Mobley and Duncan traded free throws before the teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes.

Robinson ended the drought with two free throws with 3:45 left. Olajuwon answered with a layup, but Porter and Elie buried 3-pointers around a banker by Barkley to extend the advantage to 90-82 with 1:45 remaining and send the fans heading for the exits.

"That's why I'm here," Elie said. "It's like when Terry stepped up big coming off the bench. I don't get a lot of looks. But when I get open looks, I've got to knock them down."

Avery Johnson had 14 points and nine assists for the Spurs, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77) from the field, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Porter, signed as a free agent during the offseason, is averaging 13.3 points on 52 percent shooting.

"Terry's done a great job since he arrived," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "What you saw tonight is what he's done every night for us. He's been a great addition. This year we wanted to get A.J. less minutes and that's where Terry's really stepped up for us."

"My game is pretty simple," Porter said. "I know my role is to spell A.J. and to give him some rest. But my shot has been going real good and I'm trying to contribute any way I can. This team has a lot of confidence from winning the title last year."

Walt Williams scored 19 points, Francis added 15 and Mobley 14 for the Rockets, who shot under 40 percent (33-of-83) and made just 4-of-19 from behind the arc. Francis was 0-for-5 from 3-point range.

"It's only a long season when you're losing," said Barkley, who plans to retire after this season. "When you're on a good team and you're winning, it seems like the season lasts three months."
