Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Matt Harpring, who was 0-of-8 from 3-point range this season, hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final two minutes to lift the Orlando Magic to a 107-104 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Harpring, who did not play for the first time in his brief career in the second game of the season, had 16 points and four assists in 28 minutes off the bench. His first 3-pointer came from the corner and gave the Magic a 97-90 lead with 1:43 left.

"When I hit the first one, I felt like, `Now, I can play,'" said Harpring.

After Darrell Armstrong shook Rod Strickland for an uncontested dunk and a 99-92 lead with 1:26 to go, Harpring nailed another 3-pointer with 54 seconds left, putting Orlando ahead, 102-94.

"I felt like it had to happen sometime," Harpring said. "I just had to keep shooting. When it starts feeling like there's a lid on the basket, it wears on you when you go to bed at night.

Washington was not done. Chris Whitney sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a free throw by Harpring to pull the Wizards within 103-100 with 42 seconds left.

Strickland made a pair of layups in the final minute but the Magic answered with three free throws by Armstrong and another by rookie Chucky Atkins, who partially blocked Whitney's desperation 3-point attempt at the final buzzer.

"We don't know who we are yet," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "What we try to do is rely on who is hot."

In the third quarter, the Magic rode Monty Williams, who scored all 10 of his points in the period. In the fourth quarter, Orlando turned to John Amaechi, who scored 12 of his career-high 14 points.

"We milked him like a cow," Armstrong said of Amaechi. "He may not have any milk left tomorrow. But that's OK because we don't have a game tomorrow."

Before the game, Orlando rookie swingman Corey Maggette stepped on a basketball and sprained his left ankle. He sat out but but his teammates stepped it up a notch, including Bo Outlaw, who blocked five shots.

"If you look at Bo's numbers, three points and two rebounds, you don't see what he brings," Rivers said. "But he defends everybody and he blocked five shots for us. You just wind him up and let him go.

"I just wanted the guys to play free and have fun tonight. In the first half, they really did it and they looked great. They let down a little bit, but then they hung in there and got the win."

Juwan Howard led Washington (1-2) with 22 points. Strickland just missed a triple-double with 18 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. Whitney scored 17 points, shooting 5-of-8 from behind the arc.

"It takes more than talent to win a basketball game, it takes heart," Wizards coach Gar Heard said. "Give those guys credit. I would love to win now, but I have to get these guys in basketball shape."

The Magic (2-2), meanwhile, feel like they're coming together.

"People don't think we have much of a chance," Armstrong said. "And they still aren't giving us any credit, but you've got to give Doc Rivers a lot of the credit. We just depend on each other at this point."

Michael Smith grabbed 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who held a 51-37 advantage on the boards and shot 43 percent (37-of-87).

The Magic shot 47 percent (38-of-81) and scored 23 points off turnovers.

The home club had won the previous six encounters betweeen the clubs.
