Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Even after overhauling their entire roster, the Orlando Magic still have enough to overtake the Houston Rockets.

Chris Gatling had 22 points and 16 rebounds and Houston's Hakeem Olajuwon missed a crucial free throw with 16 seconds to play as the surprising Magic posted their 10th straight victory over the winless and lifeless Rockets, 102-97.

The win was the 400th in frachise history for the Magic (3-2), who dismantled a club that had the best record in the Eastern Conference before a first-round playoff exit. Only defending conference champion New York has more wins than Orlando.

Gatling sparked a closing 13-4 run with a pair of free throws that pulled Orlando within 94-91 with 4:31 remaining, putting an end to what appeared to be a decisive 10-0 run by Houston.

"That was an amazing game," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "We started slow, but I told out guys before the game that since (the Rockets) were 0-3, they would come out with a lot of energy to get a quick lead. I wanted us to keep running and keep the pressure on them."

"We're definitely trying to prove people wrong this year," Gatling added. "A lot of people thought we'd only win eight to 10 games. But we're already 3-2. Any win we get on the road is a good win. We're a real team. We're like the Three Musketeers -- all for one and one for all."

Bo Outlaw made a pair of free throws and Darrell Armstrong, the only remaining starter from last season's 33-17 team, put the Magic ahead to stay when he hit a bank shot in the lane to make it 95-94 with 1:44 left.

"It was on a fast break," Armstrong said of his crucial basket. "I saw that (Cuttino) Mobley was the only guy back but Hakeem was coming in on the right. I decided to be aggressive and went to the basket. I knew that Hakeem was coming in on me and might block it, so I threw it high and banked it in."

Houston's Charles Barkley had 18 points and 17 rebounds but committed a crucial turnover on the ensuing possession that led to a three-point play by Orlando center John Amaechi, one of several role players Rivers has called upon down the stretch.

"I was trying to play the passing lane when (Barkley) jumped in the lane," Armstrong said of his steal of Barkley's pass. "I knew where he was going to try to go with the ball. Fortunately he threw it right at my hands."

"We only have two choices," Barkley added. "We can either stand up and fight like men or quit. And I'm not going to quit. This is a gut check for us. We improved on our offense tonight but we've got to work hard and get better in every area."

Olajuwon answered with a dunk to pull Houston within 98-96 with 1:02 left but the 15-year veteran missed the second of two free throws with 16 ticks to go before the Magic reeled off the final four points.

Mobley scored 25 points for the Rockets, who slipped to 0-4 for the first time since 1982. Houston, which is 0-3 at the Compaq Center, played in front of just 13,970 fans after selling out the arena for every regular-season game from 1996-98.

"I'm just hungry right now," Mobley said. "You've got to give up a little to get a little. We had some tough calls go against us. But when we're losing like this, it seems like everything is going against us."

Amaechi scored 18 points and rookie Corey Maggette added 14 off the bench as Orlando's reserves outscored Houston's, 70-43.

"We subbed so many guys that eventually I thought we would get some breaks in the fourth quarter with our pressure," Rivers said. "Our bench was huge throughout. We kept pushing the ball and we got our break going in the second half."

Olajuwon scored 16 points for Houston, which yielded a whopping 31 points off turnovers and shot 43 percent (34-of-79).

"We shot ourselves in the foot tonight," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We really didn't do anything special to get back in the game. We just have to put the ball in the basket and not turn it over as much."

Armstrong collected 12 points and Tariq Abdul-Wahad added 10 for Orlando, which shot 37 percent (37-of-99) and held a 56-48 advantage on the boards.

Houston appeared to take control when Mobley made two foul shots and drained a 3-pointer before Barkley sank a pair of free throws to give Houston a 93-89 lead with 4:31 left.

But the Magic responded with their game-ending run, maintaining their regular-season spell over the Rockets. Houston swept four games from Orlando in the 1995 NBA Finals.
