Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd had 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists and fueled a decisive second-quarter run as the Phoenix Suns coasted to their third straight victory, 103-80, over the floundering Chicago Bulls.

Kidd committed nine of the Suns' 29 turnovers but more than made up for his transgressions by hitting 6-of-8 shots from the floor and 7-of-10 at the line.

"I feel we are in the competition," Kidd said. "We are right there with the LAs, Portlands and Utahs of the league. We don't care that they get all the attention now. We'll lay back in the weeds and just get better. We have to work through nights like this to get to that level."

Tom Gugliotta collected 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds for Phoenix, which has recovered nicely from a season-opening 107-102 double-overtime loss to Denver.

Top overall pick Elton Brand scored 11 points and Toni Kukoc and Randy Brown added 10 apiece for Chicago, which slipped to 0-4 for the first time since opening the 1967-68 season with nine straight losses.

"At times we seemed we could match their scoring, but other times we had lapses and they kept fighting and getting ahead," Brand said.

"We wanted to turn the game into a halfcourt game," Brown added. "But it was unfortunate we turned the ball over and that allowed them to turn it into a fullcourt game."

The Bulls were within striking distance, trailing 53-43 with 3:04 remaining in the first half, before Kidd used his multi-faceted game to put the contest out of reach.

The 6-4 point guard fed Gugliotta for an uncontested dunk, made a layup and converted a three-point play during an 11-2 spurt that gave Phoenix a commanding 64-45 lead five seconds before intermission.

Cliff Robinson tallied 19 points and Penny Hardaway -- Kidd's new backcourt mate -- contributed 18 for the Suns, who shot 56 percent (40-of-72) and held a 43-36 advantage on the boards.

"They're playing unselfish," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "We are playing great stretches of basketball at times and then not playing well at all at others. We still have a lot of unfamiliarity and also some vets that rise up to play in the big moments."

Chicago, which lost seven of its first eight games last season, shot 36 percent (27-of-74) and had 26 giveaways. The Bulls forged a 2-2 tie on Brand's eight-footer just over a minute in before falling behind for good when rookie Shawn Marion answered with a 22-footer from the left sideline.

"We were really worried going into the game about guarding Hardaway and Kidd," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We gave up too many points at the three spot and the four spot. When we did stop them, we did not get it off the defensive boards and they had a lot of (follow shots)."

Marion, selected ninth overall in the draft, had 13 points and seven rebounds for Phoenix, which had lost five in a row in Chicago since the 1992-93 season. The teams did not meet in last season's lockout-shortened campaign.

The Bulls put together an impressive 12-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters, closing to 87-75 with 8:36 to play.

But Gugliotta responded with a layup, sparking a 12-2 run that was capped by Hardaway's 15-footer and opened a 99-77 cushion with 1:47 remaining.

"We just were not concentrating and executing well when we got up those 20-plus points," Kidd said. "It doesn't matter who you play in this league, you have to go out and play hard."
