Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards had their guards down and Vernon Maxwell and Gary Payton took full advantage.

Maxwell scored 24 points and Payton added 20 and 17 assists as the Seattle SuperSonics capitalized on the absence of Mitch Richmond and the benching of Rod Strickland for a 109-95 victory over the Wizards.

Richmond, Washington's leading scorer last season, sat out with a sore left knee. Strickland, who was second in the league in assists, was held out of the starting lineup by Wizards coach Gar Heard for arriving late to Tuesday's practice and played 31 minutes.

"He broke a team rule and that's why he didn't start," Heard said. "As far as I'm concerned, its over."

Washington started a backcourt of Chris Whitney and rookie Richard Hamilton, who could not contain Maxwell, Payton and Brent Barry. The trio combined for 57 points, nine 3-pointers and 21 assists as the SuperSonics defeated the Wizards for the 17th time in the last 20 meetings.

Maxwell came off the bench and made 9-of-15 shots, including four 3-pointers. He is averaging 20 points and 1.8 steals per game.

"During the past four or five years, I only played really one year of basketball in Sacramento last year," Maxwell explained. "Other than that, I really haven't played. I know my age says 34, but shucks, I ain't used my legs four out of the last five years, so I still feel good.

"I feel like I've got a lot of ball left in me. And with the new hand-check rules, I feel like at 34 I still can utilize my quickness and get to the basket. I still feel like I'm one of the quickest guys on the floor. My legs don't feel 34. They feel real good, and I think that's been the key to me."

Payton's assist total was the second-best in the NBA this season and he also grabbed seven rebounds. The duo fueled a 12-3 second-half run that gave the Sonics control.

"Gary is our leader," Maxwell said. "Where he goes, we go. He gets guys the ball at just the right time, and by the same token, he's able to get his own shots off. I'm just excited to be playing with Gary."

Juwan Howard scored 16 points and Hamilton added 15 for the Wizards (1-4), who attempted just 12 free throws and have lost four straight games. Strickland had 14 points and four assists and Whitney added 10 and 11.

A jumper by Howard capped a 10-3 burst and cut the deficit to 79-76 with 2:22 left in the third quarter before Payton and Maxwell took over. Payton made a runner and Maxwell drilled a 3-pointer for an 84-76 lead with 41 seconds left. After a jumper by Whitney, Horace Grant hit a jumper and Payton threw in a 30-footer to push the lead to 89-78 with 2.5 seconds to go.

"If you don't have a conscience, it doesn't really matter who you play with," Maxwell said. "You just go out and play with the flow of the game, and that's what I did tonight."

Grant opened the fourth quarter with a jumper and the Wizards never got within single digits thereafter. A three-point play by Vin Baker gave Seattle its largest lead at 107-89 with 3:27 remaining.

Baker scored 15 points, Ruben Patterson added 14 and Grant 12 for the Sonics (4-1), who shot 52 percent (45-of-87) from the field as they improved to 1-1 on a five-game road trip.

Isaac Austin scored 14 points and former Sonic Aaron Williams added 13 for the Wizards, who shot 48 percent (43-of-90) but just 2-of-14 from behind the arc.

In his first career start, Hamilton scored seven points in the opening period. But he and Whitney had trouble with Seattle's starting duo of Payton and Barry, who scored 10 points in the quarter.

At the end of the period, Payton drove for a layup, then stole an inbounds pass and threw in a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving Seattle a 35-27 lead. Maxwell scored 12 points in the second quarter, which ended with the Soincs holding a 65-58 advantage.

"He's been doing that almost every night for us," Grant said. "He just gives us that energy off the bench like Vinnie Johnson used to do for Detroit."
