Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse had 30 points and eight assists and Jerome Williams added 20 points and 16 rebounds off the bench to give the Detroit Pistons to their first win of the season, 110-92 over the Boston Celtics.

Stackhouse made 10-of-21 shots and 8-of-9 free throws in tying his season-high point total. Williams made 5-of-6 shots and 10-of-11 from the line as the Pistons defeated the Celtics for the fourth straight time.

Detroit (1-4), which played its fourth road game, was off to its worst start since losing its first seven games in 1980-81, the season before Isiah Thomas joined the team.

"I thought everybody played well," said Detroit coach Alvin Gentry. "The Celtics are a good team. Paul Pierce is as good a young player as there is in the game. We did a good job on defense and stepping in, helping, kicking the ball out. It was good overall defense is what it was."

Grant Hill recorded 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Detroit, which shot 46 percent (39-for-84) from the field and 90 percent (26-of-29) from the line. The Pistons had a 46-40 edge in rebounds and scored 23 points off 21 Celtics turnovers.

Detroit used a 15-5 run to take a 103-87 lead as Williams had a three-point play with 1:48 to go.

"At halftime we were shooting a higher percentage (and) outrebounding them, but the one big thing was we turned the ball over more and Detroit played extremely well scoring off of our turnovers," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "That wss a big factor and Detroit deserves a lot of credit tonight."

"Tonight we really put it together," Hill said. "We rebounded, we played defense, we finally really put it together tonight. And Stackhouse and Jerome really stepped up. When we were down we just kept our composure."

Lindsey Hunter had 15 points and nine assists for Detroit, which left the Chicago Bulls as the only winless team in the Eastern Conference.

Pierce scored 26 points and Antoine Walker added 18 and 10 rebounds for Boston (3-2), which shot 41 percent (31-of-75) and has lost two in a row.

Stackhouse scored 15 points in the first half as Detroit took a 51-43 lead.

Recently signed Doug Overton had eight points in 10 minutes, including a 13-footer to cap an 8-0 burst that pulled the Celts within 61-58 with 7:20 to go in the third period. Stackhouse answered with a layup and, after a miss by Walker, drove for another basket to give the Pistons a 65-58 lead with 6:43 left.

Boston used a 7-1 burst and closed to 68-67 when Walter McCarty made a 3-pointer with 3:32 remaining. The Celtics tied it, 72-72, on a pair of free throws by Eric Williams with 2:09 to play.

The Celtics had a chance to take the lead after a turnover by Stackhouse, but Eric Williams missed a jumper from the left sideline and Jerome Williams answered with a layup with 1:36 left. Tony Battie's dunk with 46 seconds to go tied the score, 76-76.

"I just said to the guys, `We've taken two of their biggest runs, now we just got to take the fourth quarter,'" Gentry said. "Every time they made runs we were able to respond and Stack was unbelievable and Jerome's rebounding really helped."

Hill's driving layup put the Pistons ahead for good, 78-76, with 10:30 left. Michael Curry, who made all four of his shots, followed with a 20-footer and a layup to push the lead to 82-76 with 9:37 to play.
