Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored 21 points and sparked a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Indiana Pacers cooled off the Orlando Magic with a 116-101 victory.

Miller's 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter ignited a 14-3 spurt that turned an 82-77 lead into a 16-point cushion. Al Harrington had a huge final period for Indiana, scoring 17 of his career-high 19 points.

"We got our quick guys out there in the second half, matched their intensity for eight minutes and couldn't play any better," said Pacers coach Larry Bird. "If we play good defense and get out and run, we are pretty good."

Darrell Armstrong scored 22 points and Michael Doleac added 14 for Orlando, which had won three straight games but was playing for the seventh time in 10 days. The 116 points were 11 more than the Magic surrendered in any contest this season.

"They played well and made their shots," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "They beat us up and down the court. I know we were tired but we have to keep plugging. We hung in there in the first half and stayed with them in the third. But in the fourth, we hit a wall."

Six players reached double figures in scoring for Orlando, which committed eight turnovers in the pivotal final quarter. The Magic bench, which had been one of the team's strong points thus far, was outscored 58-55.

"Our second unit was outworked tonight. Usually it is the opposite," Orlando forward Chris Gatling said. "Their reserves played like starters tonight."

The Pacers took an 82-77 lead into the fourth quarter when the 19-year-old Harrington, who continues to emerge as an early-season surprise, fed Miller for a 26-footer. Harrington buried a jumper just under two minutes into the period to push the lead to 10.

Sam Perkins made a free throw with 9:41 left before Chucky Atkins drained a 3-pointer to cut Orlando's deficit to 88-80. Harrington sank a seven-foot hook and Austin Croshere buried a 3-pointer.

After a steal by Perkins, Harrington converted a driving layup and was fouled. He made the free throw for a 96-80 lead with 7:39 to go. After scoring only 45 points in 160 minutes over 21 games last season, Harrington has 75 in 110 minutes through five games.

"I had a lot of fun tonight and would hope this would continue," Harrington said. "Coach Bird told me to calm down and stay under control. I must let the game come to me. ... This is a new year and a new beginning for me."

Indiana shot nearly 57 percent (42-of-74) from the field and made 9-of-17 3-pointers. They committed 17 turnovers and were outrebounded, 42-36.

Orlando led 24-23 after a quarter behind seven points from Armstrong. Indiana made only 10-of-23 shots in the opening 12 minutes but was 32-of-51 (63 percent) thereafter.

Travis Best scored 11 of his 17 points in the second quarter as Indiana forged ahead, 53-47. Doleac sank a 16-footer 4:24 into the third quarter to forge a 60-60 tie. The Pacers' lead was nine before Orlando rallied late and got within 82-77 on Armstrong's 3-pointer just before the third-quarter buzzer.

"This was a good win for us because we came into this game focused and with results," Best said.
