Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker had 22 points and nine rebounds and Paul Pierce added 19 and nine as the Boston Celtics, despite two long scoreless stretches in the fourth quarter, held on for an 80-74 victory over the New York Knicks.

Walker made 8-of-16 shots and Kenny Anderson was 6-of-12 but the rest of the Celtics shot just 32 percent (14-for-44) and went 5:58 without a point until Anderson hit a 3-pointer for a 75-66 lead with 5:19 left.

"At the end our shots weren't falling, but we played tough, played through it and held on for the win," Walker said.

Boston also went 3:05 without a point until Vitaly Potapenko made two free throws for a 79-74 advantage with 13 seconds remaining. The Celtics held on to defeat the Knicks for just the fourth time in the last 29 encounters.

In a fourth quarter that looked like last season in terms of defensive play, the Knicks outscored the Celtics, 16-11, and the teams combined to shoot just 29 percent (9-of-31).

"It seemed like we went back to the old rules in the fourth quarter," Anderson said. "The Knicks were playing rough, hand-checking and pushing. Give them credit, they really buckled down in the second half. They caused a couple of turnovers on us, but in the end we hung on."

Rookie Adrian Griffin grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds as Boston (4-2) held a 49-36 advantage on the boards, offsetting a 15-of-27 showing from the line.

Larry Johnson had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Allan Houston also scored 16 points for New York, which shot just 40 percent (27-for-68). Starting center Marcus Camby, who leads the Knicks with 10.3 rebounds per game, left midway though the first period with tendinitis in his left knee.

"It happened last night on the last play of the game when I went up with (Minnesota forward Kevin) Garnett," said Camby, referring to Thursday's game. "I felt it strain last night. I thought I could play with it tonight, but it was just too much. It was just too sore. I'm gonna have it MRI'd tomorrow, but I'm not really worried about."

Latrell Sprewell recorded 14 points and eight rebounds but had his streak of 23 straight free throws snapped when he missed a pair with 14 seconds left. Potapenko grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Charlie Ward. He made both shots to give Boston a five-point lead. After Chris Childs missed a 3-pointer, Pierce made one free throw for the final margin.

The Knicks (4-3) have lost their last two games overall and four straight in Boston.

"We were back in the game, we just couldn't get over the hump because we allowed too many second shots, turnovers, missed free free throws," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "You've got to play well on the road to win and we didn't."

Walker and Anderson each scored 11 points in the first half when Boston shot 51 percent (18-for-35) and held a 46-33 lead. The Celtics opened their biggest lead at 51-35 when Walker made a 3-pointer 65 seconds into the third quarter.

Johnson made a layup to cap a 10-3 burst and pull the Knicks within 54-45 with 8:32 remaining in the period. Johnson and Houston had all of New York's points in that surge, but Griffin answered with a layup and Walker followed with a 3-pointer to push the lead to 59-45 with 7:06 left.

Kurt Thomas, who had 10 points and six rebounds, made a 16-footer to cap an 8-0 surge and pull the Knicks within 72-66 with 7:48 to play. After a turnover by Walker, New York again had a chance to cut the deficit, but Sprewell missed a jumper with 7:06 to go.

Four different Boston players missed five shots before Anderson's 3-pointer with 5:19 remaining. After Pierce's jumper, Thomas made two free throws to spark another 8-0 burst that he capped with a jumper from the left sideline to make it 77-74 with 1:59 to play.
