Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers made Isaiah Rider's return a very unpleasant one.

Rider's first game against his former team was a disaster as the star-studded Trail Blazers shot 65 percent from the field and routed the Atlanta Hawks, 131-95.

During the offseason, the talented but troublesome Rider was traded with fellow guard Jimmy Jackson to Atlanta for guard Steve Smith. During his brief time with the Hawks, he has arrived late for training camp, been fined twice for missing practices and has requested a trade unless he is made the focus of Atlanta's offense.

Rider was booed during pregame introductions and things just got worse. He scored 14 points on just 5-of-15 shooting and could do nothing to slow down the Trail Blazers, who led by as many as 41 points.

Rider seemed to enjoy himself most when he was jawing with players on the Blazers' bench. Afterward, he refused to talk to reporters, leaving Jackson to express some wishful thinking.

"It's real frustrating knowing that I was a part of it last year and now coming back here. It hurts," he said.

Alan Henderson scored 22 points and rookie Jason Terry added 17 -- both season highs -- for the Hawks, who shot just 42 percent (38-of-90) and were outrebounded 47-36 as they fell to 0-3 on a four-game road trip.

"Our defense was horrendous," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We've got to get on the same page, learn when to double and who to double on. We covered the defense the last two days. It was almost like our players didn't want their guy to score -- no team defense. This team has to learn to play team defense."

Damon Stoudamire scored 20 points and Jermaine O'Neal added 17 and 10 rebounds for Portland, which had six players in double figures. Smith, the Blazers' leading scorer, was limited to nine points in just 23 minutes.

Stoudamire scored 13 points in the first quarter as the Blazers bolted to a 35-24 lead before turning it loose in the second period.

Portland shot 79 percent (15-of-19) in the quarter, using runs of 10-0 and 9-0 to open a 76-44 halftime lead. Reserves Detlef Schrempf, Bonzi Wells and Antonio Harvey shot a combined 9-of-9 in the period, scoring 23 points.

"Our passing was sharp, our execution was really good in setting people up," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Guys were just moving the ball and getting good opportunities.

"This is unquestionably the best passing team I have ever coached. With the Lakers, of course, we had a great passer in Magic Johnson but this team throughout the lineup has good passers."

The rest of the game was garbage time, with the Blazers turning on the Rose Garden crowd with dunks. A basket by Wells gave Portland its largest lead at 122-81 with 5:31 to play.

"I don't know how good Portland is," Wilkens said. "I do know that Portland is very deep, more than most teams."

Schrempf scored 16 points, Rasheed Wallace added 14 and Scottie Pippen 10 for the Blazers (6-1), who own a point differential of 16.6 but begin a six-game road trip Tuesday that includes stops in Miami, Charlotte and Minnesota.

"Tonight was fun but now it's over with and we have got some tough games coming up," Pippen said. "We need to go in positive and realize that every game on the road is going to be tough."
