Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider scored 24 points but missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds as the Atlanta Hawks lost their 10th straight road game against the Los Angeles Lakers, 93-88.

Atlanta trailed by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter but used a 17-4 run and climbed within 91-88 on Dikembe Mutombo's layup with 47 seconds left. Rider, who has asked for a bigger role in the offense, scored 11 points in the spurt.

Rider's attempt from the top of the circle bounced in and out and Derek Fisher grabbed the rebound. He made two foul shots with 8.9 seconds left to seal Los Angeles' fourth win in five games.

"He didn't even look at the rim," Fisher said of Rider. "It looked like he just shot the ball. I looked up and the ball spun around. I was lucky to get over there and secure the rebound."

"That wasn't an easy last four minutes," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "To sit and watch that happen to us was tough, but it was good for us. It is part of the personality of the team that we are learning."

One night after suffering a 131-95 loss to Portland, Atlanta completed an 0-4 road trip. The Hawks, who led the NBA in defense last season, gave up at least 100 points in each contest.

"We can't show up and think it's not going to happen," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We have to make it happen and when you get that far behind against a team that good, it's tough."

Shaquille O'Neal returned from a one-game suspension and paced the Lakers with 23 points and 11 rebounds. However, he was just 1-of-7 from the foul line. Fisher added 20 points and Glen Rice scored 14.

Alan Henderson had 14 points and 14 rebounds, Jimmy Jackson scored 13 points and Mutombo collected 12 and 16 rebounds for the Hawks, which dropped to 1-8 in their last nine contests against Los Angeles.

Atlanta is 0-5 on the road this season and has dropped its last six dating back to last season.

Fisher scored nine points during an 11-2 spurt as the Lakers took a 29-14 lead with 2:34 left in the opening quarter. He finished the period with 13 as Los Angeles's advantage rose to 35-21.

A 14-3 burst, capped by Rick Fox's driving layup, put the Lakers ahead 53-30 with 2:20 left in the half. O'Neal netted six points during the run and finished the half with 18 as Los Angeles built a 57-35 bulge.

"We played pretty good in the first half, but in the second half, we were tentative," O'Neal said. "Then, they started to hit the shots that weren't falling in the first half. Other than that, we're going to be just fine."

The Lakers gained their biggest lead, 69-42, with 5:04 left in the third quarter when Fisher hit 1-of-2 free throws.
