Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker -- Alonzo Mourning made sure the Miami Heat remained hot while extending the slump of the rival New York Knicks.

Mourning poured in 25 points and P.J. Brown added 21 to lead the Heat to their fifth straight victory, a 94-88 triumph over the Knicks, who have lost three in a row.

There is no love lost between these clubs, who have met in the postseason each of the last three years, going the maximum length each time. The Knicks have knocked out the Heat in the first round two years running.

But tonight's contest lacked the passion of those encounters as Miami jumped in front, 4-2, on Jamal Mashburn's layup just over a minute into play and never trailed thereafter.

Mourning, who was 11-of-17 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds to go with two blocks, scored seven points during the opening period as the Heat jumped out to a 27-19 lead.

"We really contained them," Mourning said. "We all did what we had to do to come out with the win. We've been playing them for three or four years now. They know our plays, we know their plays."

Mashburn had a solid all-around game with 12 points, seven rebounds and eight assists for Miami, which earned the Eastern Conference's top seed last season before falling to the eighth-seeded Knicks in five games.

"We just went out there and played," Mashburn said. "We are capable of playing both ways, one both ends of the floor and today we showed it. We just have to continue to play basketball and continue to be successful and do the right thing. We have a long way to go."

Allan Houston buried the shot that knocked off Miami last season and he scored 20 points tonight. Marcus Camby collected 22 points for New York (4-4), which has dropped three of four after opening the season with a three-game winning streak.

"Losing is hard enough, we're non-competitive right now," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Most of the good teams have good inside play. Miami has a very good inside game obviously in Mourning. We're having trouble defending, keeping out of foul trouble and getting anything in the paint ourselves."

Latrell Sprewell had a rough night, managing a season-low six points on 2-of-14 shooting in 38 minutes. Spewell missed a pair of crucial free throws during Friday's loss in Boston and has lost his shooting touch after a fast start.

"We did a good job on Sprewell without a lot of double-teaming," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We worked hard defensively. I was a little concerned with the boards for a while but they missed a lot of easy shots. We'll take the win."

"I have a lot of work to do in the gym," Sprewell added. "It seems with this team, when we get down like we are now, guys seem to step it up. But we should just learn from our mistakes and move on. But we haven't been able to do that."

Kurt Thomas had 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench for New York, which shot 39 percent (32-of-82) and held a 40-34 advantage on the boards.

The Heat shot 49 percent (34-of-70) but committed only eight turnovers while scoring 15 points on Knicks miscues.

Midway through the first quarter, Hardway hit a 3-pointer and Brown made two free throws to make it 16-10 with 4:17 left. Mourning sank a nine-footer with 44 seconds left and grabbed a rebound off Camby's miss on New York's ensuing trip.

Leading 47-39 at the half, Miami put away New York early in the third quarter.

Mourning hit two jumpers and a free throw during an 8-0 run that made it 55-39 with 9:20 left in the period and the Heat opened their biggest lead of the night seven minutes later when Hardaway sank a 25-footer to make it 70-52.

"To give up transition baskets, layups and layups, that's just not us," New York point guard Chris Childs said. "We're not challenging guys going to the basket. We are not doing anything defensively. We're playing like crap."
