Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Gary Payton turned in another strong all-around performance and the Seattle SuperSonics made it a successful road trip with a 100-92 victory over the struggling New Jersey Nets.

Payton fell just short of the first triple-double in the NBA this season, recording 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. The nine assists give him a career total of 4,896 to move past Nate McMillan (4,893) for first place in team history.

Payton, who has eight career triple-doubles, had 30 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in Saturday's 107-99 loss to the Detroit Pistons. He shot a sub-par 4-of-14 from the field and made just 7-of-13 free throws tonight, but scored nine of his points over the second and third periods when the Sonics took control.

"We're aggravated because we get a big lead and don't take care of the basketball," said Seattle coach Paul Westphal. "We gave them second shots and let them back into the game. But that will all be forgotten on the plane ride home because we got the win. We need to get better when we get teams down."

Vin Baker and Vernon Maxwell each scored 21 points to lead Seattle, which completed a 3-2 road trip. The Sonics return home one-half game behind the Portland TrailBlazers and Los Angeles Lakers for the lead in the Pacific Division.

"I got shots and was focusing on knocking the shots down," said Baker, who was 9-of-14. "We have vets on this team, and guys that never give up. We're not going to worry too much about the collapse. We're happy that we got the `W'."

Ruben Patterson had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Brent Barry scored 13 points for the Sonics, who shot 49 percent (35-of-72) and took the lead for good at 30-29 when Maxwell hit an 18-footer 27 seconds into the second quarter. That basket triggered a 19-1 run that Payton capped with a 21-footer for a 47-30 lead with 4:52 left in the period.

Stephon Marbury scored 24 points and Keith Van Horn added 15 and 12 rebounds for New Jersey, which has lost three straight. The pair combined to shoot just 32.5 percent (14-of-43). Kendall Gill scored 15 points and was the only Net to shoot over 50 percent, making 7-of-12 shots. The Nets shot just 36 percent (36-of-101) from the floor.

"There really weren't any positives that we can take from this," Gill said. "We had the opportunity to pull one out and we didn't, so there's absolutely no positive in that. I think all we need is a couple of wins in a row. It will give us back the the taste of winning."

Maxwell scored 10 points in the second quarter and Seattle took a 57-43 lead into the locker room. The Sonics had their biggest lead when Barry completed a three-point play for a 79-57 bulge with 3:51 left.

The Nets cut the deficit to 81-67 at the end of the third as Elliot Perry made a pair of free throws with 1:27 remaining and Johnny Newman hit a layup with 1.9 seconds left.

New Jersey opened the fourth with a 12-2 run to close within 83-79 when Marbury made a 17-footer with 8:42 to play. It was the third straight basket for Marbury, but Baker responded with consecutive jumpers to push the margin to 87-79.

"It's easy to play in the third or fourth quarter when you're down by 15 or 20 points because you have no pressure on you," Marbury said. "You can't play like that always. Our transition defense is not good right now. Nobody is really getting into the paint. I'm the only person that's really penetrating."
