Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- It doesn't matter where in Texas the Houston Rockets play. They can't win.

Houston played its worst game of the season and fell to 0-6 in its home state as the Dallas Mavericks cruised to a 114-95 victory.

The Rockets shot just 37 percent from the floor and 63 percent from the free-throw line while committing 17 turnovers and getting only three points from rookie standout Steve Francis, who was ejected in the second quarter for a flagrant foul.

Michael Finley totaled 28 points and 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who built a 26-point lead in the fourth quarter. They shot 53 percent from the field.

"We wanted to play our running style against them," said Dallas forward Cedric Ceballos. "They came in late last night. We wanted to push them up and down the floor."

Ceballos scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench for Dallas, which has won consecutive games for the first time this season.

"We have confidence," Ceballos said. "The opportunities for us to keep competing at a high level must continue. Small things are working. We have respect for what we're doing."

The Rockets followed an 0-5 start with road wins against Golden State and the Los Angeles Lakers, but they have dropped two games in as many nights, falling at home to Indiana on Monday, 96-87.

Houston is 0-5 at home and winless in Texas after tonight's loss.

"It's surprising because sometimes it just doesn't sink in," Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon said. "We're much better than how we've played. We need to start maturing and growing together as a team."

Only Shandon Anderson played at least 30 minutes among Rockets starters. Charles Barkley, Walt Williams and Francis combined for 17 points on 5-of-23 shooting in starting roles.

Francis was ejected after slamming Dirk Nowitzki to the ground by the back of his jersey. He threw a punch at Steve Nash in the ensuing scuffle.

"There's nothing to say about what happened," Francis said. "I have no comment on what happened."

"I'll leave it up to the league," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich added. "I don't know the guidelines on that."

It was the second time since the exhibition season that Houston was called for a flagrant foul against Dallas.

"When someone has a we-can-do-anything-to-you attitude, it can have a domino effect," Ceballos said. "We're not going to let people flagrant foul us and get away with it."

The start of the game was a taste of things to come for Houston as the Mavericks opened with an 18-9 spurt. They added runs of 11-2 and 18-4 to build their biggest lead, 105-79 with six minutes left.

Dallas has won three straight meetings with the Rockets after dropping 11 in a row.

"Even a broken clock is right twice a day," Barkley said.

Shawn Bradley scored Dallas' first six points of the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 92-75. Four other players scored during the crippling 18-4 spurt.

Finley finished 12-of-17 from the field while fellow starters Nowitzki, Sean Rooks, Robert Pack and Erick Strickland combined for 49 points on 18-of-32 shooting.

"I took it upon myself not just to score but to keep everybody involved, keep the enthusiasm going," Finley said. "Fortunately for me, my shot and my teammates' shots were falling. We just got the open man the ball."

Pack and Finley also totaled 17 of Dallas' 29 assists. The Rockets finished with only 19.

Bryce Drew scored 15 points off the bench, Anderson added 14 and Olajuwon and Carlos Rogers each had 13 for the Rockets, who did hold a 57-44 advantage in rebounds.
