Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- It took the Vancouver Grizzlies 99 seconds to sum up their existence.

Vernon Maxwell drained a 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds remaining as the Seattle SuperSonics rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 99 seconds for a 110-108 victory over the Grizzlies.

Othella Harrington made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:39 to play to give the Grizzlies a seemingly safe 106-96 cushion.

But Maxwell, who scored 15 of his 27 points in the final period, sank a 3-pointer before Bryant Reeves answered for Vancouver with a layup with 71 seconds left. Gary Payton sank a pair of foul shots and followed with a 3-pointer to cut the Sonics' deficit to four with 39 seconds to play.

The first of three consecutive turnovers by Shareef Abdur-Rahim led to a layup by Brent Barry with 14 seconds left. Abdur-Rahim threw the ensuing inbounds pass right to Horace Grant, who called a timeout.

Maxwell completed the comeback and put the Sonics ahead with his 3-pointer just to the left of the top of the key. Vancouver called a timeout but Abdur-Rahim was called for charging with 2.3 seconds left.

"We showed a lot of character to do what we did," Maxwell said. "Coach wouldn't let us quit, Gary wouldn't let us quit. We had some big steals and came out with a real big win. They started celebrating a little too early. You can't do that with a veteran club like ours."

Payton, who came within one rebound of the season's first triple-double, sealed the win with a free throw. He had 24 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists.

"I've never seen a game turn this way," Payton said. "We stole the ball with 13 seconds left. That's incredible. They tried to play keep-away. I think you have to take the ball to the basket."

After entering the season with several question marks, the Sonics have eight wins to tie Portland for the tops in the league.

"I told the team it could be done," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "I've only seen it one other time. That's when I was with the Suns against the Lakers. Somehow it happened; crazy things happen. We overcame a lot and got a miracle win."

Abdur-Rahim had 31 points and Harrington added a career-high 25 for the Grizzlies, who are a dismal 51-203 since entering the NBA in 1995-96.

"This is why basketball is such a great game, because it's a game of momentum," Grizzlies reserve guard Brent Price said.

The duo of Abdur-Rahim and Harrington also helped the Grizzlies dominate the boards, grabbing 14 and 13 rebounds, respectively. Vancouver held a mammoth 55-36 edge on the glass.

Seattle was able to come back in the final quarter without Vin Baker, who was ejected with 8:13 remaining after he picked up a pair of technical fouls. He finished with 12 points.

Barry added 19 points as the Sonics overcame 43.5 percent shooting (37-of-86) compared to 54 percent (40-of-74) for Vancouver. The Grizzlies' downfall was 22 turnovers that led to 25 points for Seattle.

Maxwell made 9-of-17 shots, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Seattle shot 37 percent (10-of-27) from 3-point range.

Abdur-Rahim scored 13 points and Bryant Reeves had 10 of his 15 in the first half, helping the Grizzlies to a 55-51 advantage.
