Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- That's the ticket.

Kevin Garnett continued his torrid start to the season with 29 points and 11 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves posted an 89-84 victory over the Utah Jazz.

Nicknamed "Big Ticket," the 23-year-old Garnett came into his fifth season averaging 16.2 points per game. But this season, the emerging star has upped his average to 28 points and 14.3 rebounds per contest.

Garnett is also learning how to take games over in crucial spots. After the Jazz pulled within 73-70 with 6 1/2 minutes left, Garnett scored six straight points to give Minnesota a nine-point cushion with under four minutes to play.

"Games inside our division are very important," Garnett said. "This was a game we needed, especially after our loss to the Clippers. We didn't come through when we were supposed to last game, and we had to tonight."

Karl Malone and John Stockton tallied 19 points apiece to lead Utah, which won all three games from the Timberwolves last season.

"There were opportunities for us, we just didn't capitalize," Malone said.

The Jazz were within 60-57 with 62 seconds left in the third after Malone, who hit 6-of-16 shots, drained a 17-footer. However, things went downhill from there.

Garnett answered that basket with a move to hoop in which he was fouled by Malone. He stepped to the line and sank two foul shots. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan argued the call and was hit with a pair of technical fouls, resulting in his ejection.

Garnett talked about his matchup with Malone.

"I enjoy playing the game of basketball, whomever I'm matched up against," he said. "Karl is a great player with more than 29,000 points, but his shots weren't falling tonight. I'm sure the next time we see him, that'll be different."

Malik Sealy converted one of the technical free throws and capped the quarter with a layup, giving the Timberwolves an eight-point advantage entering the final period.

Minnesota continued its surge in the fourth and took its biggest lead at 68-57 following Radoslav Nesterovic's layup with 10:56 left. Nesterovic had eight points and 10 rebounds.

A layup by Howard Eisley brought the Jazz within 73-70 with 6 1/2 minutes left. But Garnett made two free throws and followed with consecutive jumpers for a nine-point bulge with 3:45 to go.

Garnett connected on 10-of-18 shots as the Timberwolves shot 44 percent (34-of-78). Utah finished at just 37 percent (28-of-75) from the floor.

The first half was an exercise in futility by both teams, with Minnesota holding a 34-29 lead at the break. The Jazz shot a dismal 28 percent (11-of-39) over the opening 24 minutes.

"The way we were playing, I didn't think we were ever going to score 30 points," Sloan said. "They came out and outplayed us and wanted to win more than we did. They outrebounded us, they had more blocked shots than us and they had more offensive rebounds. So that to me is an indication that you're not ready to play."
