Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets' home-court advantage was not enough to stop the league-leading, road-savvy Portland Trail Blazers.

Detlef Schrempf sank a 23-foot jumper with 1:14 remaining in overtime to put Portland ahead for good as it posted its sixth straight win, 100-96 over Charlotte, which suffered its first home loss of the season.

Portland fell behind 91-88 in overtime before reeling off the next eight points. Steve Smith framed Schrempf's go-ahead basket with a pair of jumpers and Greg Anthony, who scored a season-high 24 points off the bench, made a pair of free throws to give Portland a 96-91 cushion with 24 seconds left.

"This is a great win for us tonight," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said after watching his team pull out its fifth straight road win. "Our guys really hung tough. Down the stretch we found some legs. We were able to make the big plays and stops down the stretch when we needed them."

Elden Campbell scored a season-high 24 points and made up for two crucial misses from the line down the stretch by burying a short jump hook in the lane with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to forge an 86-86 tie and force overtime.

Campbell chased down a rebound after a wild scramble for the loose ball and appeared to take more than the two steps allowed before lofting the tying shot. Portland had one last chance in regulation, but Detlef Schrempf fired an airball from the top of the arc as time expired.

"There's no consolation in losing," Campbell said. "It was a well-played game, but we still lost. When you're not putting the ball in, you have to make it up in other areas. They did what they had to to win."

The Blazers improved the top record in the league to 10-1. Portland's lone loss came at Utah on November 9.

The Hornets slipped to 5-1 at home and 6-5 overall.

Brian Grant returned to action after missing nine games with an injured knee and contributed 12 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes.

"My legs are coming under me a bit better now," Grant said. "I was hoping to play as many minutes as I could. I'm glad the coach had confidence to put me in there. I've got a ways to go as far as getting in shape and constantly running up and down the floor."

Grant, who played a major role in Portland's surge to the Western Conference finals last season, has not factored in the Blazers' early-season success.

Rasheed Wallace scored 17 points and Smith and Schrempf added 12 apiece for Portland, which shot an uncharacteristic 43 percent (39-of-90), lost the battle along the boards, 52-41, yet still found a way to win in a hostile environment.

Eddie Jones tallied 22 points and Bobby Phills added 11 for Charlotte, which shot 38 percent (34-of-89) and yielded 20 points off 18 turnovers.

"You hate to lose a game. Especially when it feels like you have a team and then you take your hands off the choke," Jones said. "Veteran teams always find a way to get it done. Two and a half minutes to go in the game, I thought we had them. It just wasn't our night."

Portland's Scottie Pippen had a woeful night, managing just six points on 3-of-11 shooting in 32 minutes.

But Pippen did play a big role in the Blazers' decisive run, drawing a charging foul after Schrempf's basket in overtime to set up Smith's 18-footer that extended the lead to 94-91 with 39 seconds to play.

"Tonight was one of those games," Pippen said. "We couldn't find the energy but we did find a way to win. It's hard to tell who the man is on this team. We all look for one another and we distribute the ball well."
