Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored a season-high 40 points on 17-of-25 shooting and Bryon Russell added 19 and seven rebounds off the bench as the Utah Jazz defeated the Milwaukee Bucks, 111-100.

John Stockton contributed 18 points and 12 assists for Utah, which shot 55 percent (44-of-80) from the field and won for the third time in four games.

"We had a lot of guys play hard for us tonight," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We shot the ball real well and executed our offense better than last night against Minnesota. Karl had a super game, shot the ball well and was alive on the floor."

Ray Allen scored 23 points but shot just 6-of-17 from the field and Glenn Robinson added 18 for Milwaukee (6-4), which suffered its first home loss of the season.

"We lacked confidence in the game," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We didn't have confidence offensively and we struggled defensively. They had the shots going down better than we did."

Milwaukee cut Utah's lead to 99-88 as Tim Thomas hit a 3-pointer and Sam Cassell made an 11-footer with 5:41 to go. But Malone converted on a three-point play and Stockton hit a 15-footer with with 3:23 remaining. Milwaukee never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

"If we keep playing like this, we'll be fine," Malone said. "When we play hard and execute we are a good team. If not we are mediocre. We had not been playing well on the road and this was a nice test for us."

Malone scored only four points in the first quarter, but Milwaukee shot only 35 percent (7-of-20) from the field as the Jazz took a 23-18 lead.

"The Mailman" started to turn it on in the second quarter as he scored 12 points. The Jazz extended their lead to 53-41 with 64 seconds left on an 18-footer by Russell and entered intermission with a 53-43 advantage.

Utah went on a 6-0 run to take its largest lead of the game in the third quarter. Stockton had four points and Malone added two of his 13 third-quarter points on a layup as the Jazz moved out to a 78-59 advantage with 4:58 remaining in the period.

The Jazz made 66 percent (14-of-21) of their shots and outscored Milwaukee, 35-28, in the third quarter to take an 88-71 lead.

Overall, Utah outrebounded Milwaukee, 39-34, and committed only 11 turnovers.

The Bucks shot 48 percent (38-of-78) from the field, with the starting five combining for 22-of-52 (48 percent). Milwaukee also committed 15 turnovers.
