Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill scored 31 points and the Detroit Pistons overcame the hot-shooting of Ray Allen and posted a 113-94 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Hill, who connected on 10-of-15 shots from the floor, scored six points in a 21-8 burst in the second quarter that gave the Pistons a double-digit lead they never relinguished. Hill also made all 11 of his free throws and handed out seven assists.

The effort by Hill helped the Pistons overcome Allen, who scored a season-high 33 points to go along with 10 assists. He hit his first 10 shots and finished 13-of-15 from the floor.

Milwaukee split four games this past week.

"Over the course of the season there are going to be a lot of five-game situations," Allen said. "Sometimes you will be 3-2, other times 0-5 and some 5-0. You have to learn from each of those. Right now, we have to learn how to play back-to-back and how well we respond when we're knocked down."

Lindsey Hunter added 21 points and Christian Laettner had 16 and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who won their season-high third straight game and avenged a loss to Milwaukee earlier this season when they blew a big lead.

"That game was good for us tonight because we knew what they were capable of doing," Hunter said. "We had total control of that game and they took it away from us. We weren't going to let that happen tonight."

Glenn Robinson was the only other play to score in double figures for Milwaukee, tallying 20 points.

The Bucks entered the game as the highest scoring team in the NBA at 106.9 points per contest, but were held to their lowest total of the season.

Allen drained a 3-pointer early in the second quarter to pull the Bucks within one, but the Pistons responded with their 21-8 burst, capped by Laettner's layup with 5:05 left before halftime that made it 56-42.

Detroit shot 53 percent (41-of-77) and won despite committing 17 turnovers that led to 21 points for the Bucks.

"We got our (expletive) whipped tonight," Bucks coach George Karl said. "It's a combination of everything, what they did and what we didn't do. We've got to get better defensively as a team and control the ball. At times we made good plays and at times, bad ones. There's no consistency on defense."

The Pistons maintained a double-digit advantage and took their biggest lead of the contest at 109-81 with 5:05 remaining after Laettner hit a jumper. Laettner had one of his best games of the season and made 7-of-16 shots.

"I thought this was the best game we've played all season from start to finish," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "I thought the first quarter was a much higher pace then we needed or wanted. But after the first quarter, we did a better job."

In addition to having a strong game on offense, Hunter also put the clamps on Milwaukee guard Sam Cassell, who came into the contest averaging 21 points per game. Cassell finished with eight points and four turnovers.
