Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Vince Carter scored a career-high 34 points and Dell Curry keyed a fourth-quarter run as the Toronto Raptors posted a 111-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Curry scored all of the Raptors points during a 10-2 spurt as they opened a 95-83 lead with 7 1/2 minutes left. Curry hit a pair of 3-pointers during the decisive burst to help the Raptors open their five-game road trip on a positive note.

"Well, I don't think I was really in the zone," Curry said. "I mean, that's my job, to come in and make shots. When I get those looks, I feel confident that I can make them all."

Derek Harper hit a driving layup with 1:49 left to pull Los Angeles within 102-99, but it could not get any closer and suffered its second loss in three contests.

"We just couldn't stop them tonight," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We just didn't match the intensity of the game when it came down to a crucial points in the game."

Carter scored 13 points in the third quarter and broke his previous high of 32, set against Houston on March 25. He shot 13-of-26 from the floor and also finished with 13 rebounds.

"Many people don't think he can play better, but I think he can," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "He didn't shoot the ball that well, he just made the shots when we needed him to. He'll learn how to make better usage of his shots."

Dee Brown and Doug Christie each scored 15 points while Curry and Antonio Davis added 13 apiece for Toronto, which won for the first time in four road games against the Lakers.

Shaquille O'Neal scored 37 points and grabbed 19 rebounds while Glen Rice added 29 points for Los Angeles, which dropped to 4-2 at the Staples Center. O'Neal was 7-of-16 from the foul line as the Lakers shot 59 percent (14-of-27) overall.

"We just got to play better defense," O'Neal said. "We need to hold team to 30 or 40 points in the second half. In the last couple of games, we haven't been doing that."

Toronto won for just the second time in seven meetings with Los Angeles despite being outscored, 60-34, in the paint.

Carter scored 13 points in the first half and Brown added 11 as the Raptors opened a 58-52 lead. Rice scored 18 and O'Neal had 17 and 11 rebounds.

The Lakers used a 13-2 run to take a 70-67 lead with 3:38 left in the third quarter as O'Neal scored seven points in that spurt. He had 18 in the period, but Los Angeles trailed 81-79.
