Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Facing the possibility of not registering a home win until December, the Houston Rockets took advantage of the undermanned Dallas Mavericks.

Charles Barkley scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Rockets to a 119-99 romp over Dallas. Barkley made 10-of-15 shots as Houston shot 53 percent (48-for-90) from the floor.

"This has been a very frustrating and disappointing season thus far," Barkley said. "Tonight was the first time this year that I've played up to my ability. Tonight was the first time this year that I had a clear mind.

"It's hard to accept that when you come in to watch film that guys will have on B.E.T. and that when you're supposed to get ready to go at 4:00 that guys won't be ready until 4:30," Barkley added. "It's been (ticking) me off all season. But I'm not going to let it bother me the rest of the year. I don't like the rest of the stuff and I haven't been mentally into this year. But that's no excuse I'm going to play like Charles Barkley can play the rest of the season."

Rookie Steve Francis had 17 points and seven assists and backcourt mate Shandon Anderson added 16 points and five rebounds for Houston, which ended a five-game losing streak and improved to 1-6 at home.

"We pushed the ball more tonight," Francis said. "Charles was a big lift both offensively and defensively and he got a lot of rebounds."

The Rockets begin a four-game road trip on Friday at Portland and do not return home until December 4.

Houston's reserves outscored the Mavericks' bench, 42-13. Cuttino Mobley contributed 15 points, Bryce Drew added 14 and Carlos Rogers had 10 and eight rebounds.

Dirk Nowitzki scored a career-high 31 points and Michael Finley added 29 for Dallas, which had only eight players in uniform. Cedric Ceballos was out with the flu, Randell Jackson has a right thigh bruise, Steve Nash is nursing a right ankle strain and Robert Pack has a pulled hamstring.

"We've got to play the hand that we're dealt," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "Right now we have a lot of injuries, but we just have to play through it. I thought that my team played hard tonight. We came out sluggish the start of the third. I thought the Rockets were a lot more ready to play. Maybe they were surprised we were as close at halftime but they had a lot of energy and we didn't."

Dallas closed within 57-56 when Finley tipped in a miss of Erick Strickland's shot to start the third period. Hakeem Olajuwon, who had eight points and six rebounds, annswered with a layup to ignite a 12-0 burst for Houston. Francis had six points on the run, capping it with two free throws for a 69-56 lead with 9:06 left in the third.

Nowitzki ended Houston's run with a driving layup, but Anderson responded with a 3-pointer that started an 11-4 surge. Barkley dunked to cap it, giving the Rockets an 80-62 advantage with just under six minutes to go in the third.

Houston had its biggest at 117-91 on a 3-pointer by Drew with 3:26 to play in the fourth.
