Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets broke their usual routine of getting down big early, and it paid off with a victory.

Keith Van Horn sparked a fourth-quarter burst and the Nets stopped a seven-game losing streak with their second win of the season, posting a 92-84 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Leading by one point entering the fourth quarter, the Nets used a 14-5 spurt to take control and improved to 2-12. Van Horn, who finished with 22 points, had six in the decisive run.

Johnny Newman also finished with 22 points and Stephon Marbury had 21 for the Nets, whose only halftime leads have come in their two victories.

The Warriors, who have dropped eight of their first 10 games, were led by Tony Farmer's career-high 19 points.

"You can't be happy with personal accolades because we haven't come out of it with a victory," said Farmer, who connected on 6-of-11 shots.

Clinging to a 64-63 lead entering the fourth quarter, the Nets opened the period with a 14-5 run to take a 78-68 lead with 7:05 left after Van Horn converted a pair of free throws.

Van Horn, who entered the game shooting just 37 percent from the floor, had a another rough night from the floor, going 8-of-21. But he also grabbed 11 rebounds in his 37 minutes.

Golden State made a run and pulled within 84-79 with just over two minutes left after Antawn Jamison, who finished with 12 points, made a short jumper.

But Marbury converted a layup and Newman followed with two free throws for a nine-point bulge with 87 seconds to play.

"It was a real gutty win for us," Nets coach Don Casey said. "We played a really strong game, an important game. If we had stumbled at the end it would have been devastating. It's a relief for all of us."

Criticized for shooting too much this season, Marbury connected on 6-of-16 shots. He handed out eight assists and also committed eight turnovers in 46 minutes.

The Nets were able to win despite having six players miss the game with injuries. They had nine players available.

Van Horn tallied 14 of his points in the opening half, helping the Nets take a 51-45 advantage. New Jersey scored just 13 points in the third quarter but still held a one-point lead entering the final period.

"It feels good, we have a lot to build on," Van Horn said. "They made their run and we were able to sustain. In the past, we wouldn't be able to get back into it. We had a cushion to work on. You can't look at the record of the other team you're playing. I know it's in us to go out and do it, and if we do it, we'll be in every game."
