Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Raef LaFrentz collected 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets completed their first three-game winning streak in nearly three years with a 109-84 rout of the Toronto Raptors.

LaFrentz, limited to 12 games last season as a rookie due to a knee injury, did all of his rebounding in the first three quarters as Denver opened a 79-63 lead. The 6-11 forward grabbed 15 boards at Portland on February 17 before absorbing his season-ending injury.

"Some nights the ball comes to you and some nights it doesn't," LaFrentz said. "I knew I was going to have to be aggressive and I just concentrated on getting the body on them. We're doing a good job on defense, we're coming together and trusting each other and covering each other's backs."

"Raef is improving every time he steps out on the floor," Denver coach Dan Issel added.

Nick Van Exel scored 19 points to pace a season-high seven players in double figures for Denver, which had not won three in a row since December 18-23, 1996. One of the main reasons for the Nuggets' inconsistency is a dismal 5-80 road mark since February 1997.

Denver's 5-5 record marks the latest the Nuggets have been at the break-even mark since 1995-96, when they split their first 20 games.

Ron Mercer and Keon Clark each had 13 points for Denver, which improved to 5-2 at home. Mercer's layup with 3:20 remaining in the first half put the Nuggets ahead for good, 47-46.

Vince Carter scored 16 points and Tracy McGrady and Dell Curry added 13 apiece for the Raptors, who were coming off Tuesday's heartbreaking last-second loss at Phoenix and appeared to run out of steam in the second half.

"They had a tough one last night, so we wanted to jump on them early," Van Exel said.

"Tonight we had a little moss on the stone," Toronto coach Butch Carter admitted. "Dan Issel did a good job with their game plan."

George McCloud had 12 points and Antonio McDyess and rookie James Posey added 10 apiece for Denver, which shot 42 percent (44-of-105) and held a 53-44 advantage on the boards.

The Nuggets were the more opportunistic team, scoring 24 points off turnovers while giving away the ball only eight times.

"They just outplayed us and outhustled us," Toronto guard Dee Brown said. "They would tip it and keep it going and keep the ball in play. We couldn't put the ball in the bucket."

Denver held a 53-46 lead at halftime but blew open the game in the third quarter. McDyess' 12-footer with 5:16 left in the period capped an 8-0 run and gave the Nuggets a 71-53 cushion.

Things got ugly in the fourth as Denver used a 13-3 spurt to open its biggest lead, 109-80, with 1:20 remaining.

Denver posted season highs with 11 steals and 10 blocked shots and received 44 points off the bench.

The Raptors shot 43 percent (31-of-73).
