Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The road woes continued for the Charlotte Hornets as Lamond Murray had 16 points and 16 rebounds and Andrew DeClercq added 16 and eight to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 106-89 victory.

Bob Sura scored 15 points and Shawn Kemp added 10 and nine rebounds for Cleveland, which opened with a 32-13 lead after the first quarter and never trailed. Kemp made just 3-of-15 shots but the rest of the Cavaliers' starters shot 54 percent (20-of-37) from the floor.

Murray, playing in his fifth game after missing the first seven with a sprained MCL, fell one short of his career high for rebounds.

"I was able to get out on the break and get easy buckets on the offensive end," Murray said. "Charlotte didn't get that much tonight. We were focused, we wanted to come out here early on and make our defense give us our offense, which was to deny the wings, get good rebounds and push the ball out on the break."

Cleveland had a 27-6 advantage in fast-break points and won for the second time in three games following a three-game skid. The Cavs were coming off a 106-83 loss to the Allen Iverson-less Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.

"What a difference in a night," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "We were up denying passes, we got a hand in every guys' face on the jump shot (tonight). We were soft and stood around last night. When we come out and play the way we played tonight and Tuesday night (a win over Portland), this is a good ballclub that will be in every game. When we don't, we have a hard time competing."

Eddie Jones scored 22 points on just 7-of-23 shooting for Charlotte. Bobby Phills scored 15 points in 14 minutes off the bench and David Wesley added 13 for the Hornets, who fell to 1-5 on the road and dropped one game behind Toronto for the lead in the Central Division.

"It was a distraction and disappointment, all of those things," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "You can't miss shots and win and we missed shots. I wasn't surprised because I watched their tape and they did the same thing to Portland. They're looking to run so that wasn't a surprise at all. I was surprised that we didn't get back on defense well enough. That seemed to be the key to the game."

Phills, who spent six seasons with Cleveland, left with a pulled left hamstring with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter.

It was the largest margin of defeat for Charlotte, which was coming off its biggest rout, 118-85 over Washington on Friday.

"You look for that one blowout game, you think that it's going to catapult you on your way to where a good team gets on a roll," Phills said. "We played that kind of game last night and then we came out today and it's like, `Who was that that played the night before?' We're baffled. We still have a lot of questions and we're looking for answers."

Mark Bryant and Wesley Person each contributed 10 points off the bench for Cleveland, which had at least five points from 10 players.

"We came out and played as soon as they threw the ball up in the air," Bryant said. "That's important for us. We have to come out and play a whole 48 minutes of basketball."

Cleveland came out running and opened a 16-4 lead when Murray made a layup with 5:49 left in the first quarter. The Cavaliers closed the period with a 12-1 run, with Cedric Henderson's dunk off a pass from Andre Miller capping it. Charlotte shot just 16 percent (3-for-19) in the opening quarter.

The Cavaliers took their biggest lead at 38-16 when Person hit a 3-pointer. Cleveland went scoreless for nearly four minutes but Charlotte only closed to 40-26 when Phills made a three-point play with 5:55 left in the second period.

Cleveland took a 54-41 lead into halftime and began the third quarter with a 6-0 spurt, capped by Sura's 22-footer with 9:32 to go. The Hornets pulled within 67-59 on Wesley's 19-footer with 2:31 left.

Person responded with a three-point play and Miller followed with a layup, giving the Cavs a 75-63 cushion heading into the final quarter.
