Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and Anthony Peeler added 17 before watching most of the fourth quarter as the Minnesota Timberwolves routed the overmatched Vancouver Grizzlies, 113-82.

Joe Smith came off the bench to score 16 points and rookie Wally Szczerbiak added 14 and five assists for Minnesota, which posted the second-biggest margin of victory in franchise history. The Timberwolves had a 32-point romp over the Dallas Mavericks on January 2, 1993.

"I have been playing well the last couple of games, but more importantly, the team gave a good effort tonight," Szczerbiak said. "We came out strong at the start of the game, moved the ball well and played tough defense. We can't get too up after a victory like tonight, just as we can't get too down after losses like last night."

Terrell Brandon collected 12 points and six assists for the Timberwolves, who snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 9-0 all-time at home against the Grizzlies.

Garnett and Brandon rested the entire fourth period, while Peeler played just two minutes. Peeler made 4-of-5 3-pointers, as Minnesota shot 50 percent (5-for-10) from behind the arc.

"We sort of played together tonight," Garnett said. "Wally and Terrell had big nights for us. We moved the ball inside and out well. That's what we need to do to win on a consistent basis."

The Timberwolves opened their largest lead when Sam Mitchell made a pair of free throws to make it 101-64 with 6:18 to go. Minnesota oustcored Vancouver in every period except the fourth, when each had 26. The Timberwolves have won eight of the last nine meetings with the Grizzlies.

Othella Harrington scored 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting and Felipe Lopez added 11 points for the Grizzlies, who completed a winless four-game road trip and lost their 29th straight game away from home.

"The game was a complete embarrassment, on both ends of the floor, offensively and defensively," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "I can guarantee it will never happen again, no matter what moves I have to make. I don't want to answer any questions right now because I am in a state of rage right now. I don't want to say anything stupid."

Vancouver leading scorer Shareef Abdur-Rahim took just seven shots and had six points, 15 below his average.

"I can not explain that (stuff)," Abdur-Rahim said. "I don't think we've come out that bad since I've been here. We played terrible. We had some guys that came off the bench and played hard and showed some heart."

The Timberwolves used an 18-4 run and opened a 21-8 lead when Peeler made a pair of free throws with 3:10 left in the first period. Peeler and Garnett each had six points in the run.

Smith scored six points on a 14-2 run that he capped with a layup, pushing the cushion to 37-16 with 5:50 left in the second period.

Minnesota took a 56-30 lead into the second half and did not let it fall below 22 points. Garnett's final basket, a dunk on a fast break, capped an 11-2 burst and gave the Timberwolves a 77-46 bulge with 3:18 left in the third quarter.
