Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Allan Houston and Latrell Sprewell carried the New York Knicks from start to finish.

Houston hit a clutch fadeaway jumper with 22 seconds to go to give New York the lead and Sprewell sank two free throws 18 seconds later as the Knicks posted a 99-96 victory over the Orlando Magic.

On a day when the Knicks placed scoring forward Larry Johnson on the injured list with a pinched nerve in his back, Houston and Sprewell shouldered even more of the offensive burden. They finished with 30 points apiece and the duo combined for 22 of the team's first 30 points.

"I don't look at anything as a burden," Houston said. "I try to stay away from negative words. I look at it as a challenge and I think it's going to be something that all of us are going to take advantage of."

Chris Gatling led Orlando with 17 points and Darrell Armstrong added 16. Former Knick Monty Williams scored 14 points for the Magic, who had won two in a row.

New York also snapped a three-game losing streak to Orlando, posting its first victory over the Magic since March 10, 1998.

"We didn't let them get ahead too far," Sprewell said. "I think that was key. We played hard and didn't get into a hole."

"Our intensity was a little better but were still not playing as well as we should be on defense," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We gave up too many points and too many layups in transition. We have to be aware of that. If we keep giving up 27 to 30 points in a quarter, that's not good."

The game was tied, 90-90, with 2:23 left following a free throw by Sprewell. Michael Doleac put the Magic on top 15 seconds later with two free throws and Sprewell missed a jumper from the right wing.

Bo Outlaw ran down the loose rebound and was fouled. Outlaw, a 35 percent free throw shooter, missed both with 1:40 remaining. Knicks center Andrew Lang rushed a jumper and Orlando had possession with just over a minute left but Ben Wallace was whistled for traveling with 62 seconds to go.

Chris Childs buried a 3-pointer 14 seconds later to put New York in front, 93-92, but Orlando answered on a 10-footer by Pat Garrity with 34 seconds left. The Knicks did not call timeout and Houston sank his jumper to put New York ahead for good.

Garrity missed a 19-footer on Orlando's ensuing possession and Sprewell hit two free throws for a 97-94 advantage. Armstrong was fouled before he could get off a 3-pointer and sank two free throws to shave the deficit to a point with 2.9 seconds to go. Houston was fouled on the inbounds pass and made both attempts with 2.1 seconds to go.

"We played hard and did everything we could do to win the game," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "We got the right shots. They made some, we missed them. I thought the explanation of this game was pretty simple: They made a couple of key shots and we missed a couple of key shots."

Prior to the final possession, the Magic did not call their 20-second timeout. Chucky Atkins' desperation 60-foot heave at the buzzer was well off.

"We set it up in the huddle and we felt that if you call a timeout to set up a 3, that gives them time to set up their defense," Rivers said. "We can't advance the ball so there's no reason to use it."

Neither team was able to open much of an advantage over the opening 24 minutes. Sprewell scored 16 and Houston 15 but the Knicks still trailed 50-49 at the break.

Orlando had six players score between 11 and 17 points but made just 3-of-14 3-pointers. New York committed just seven turnovers, was 6-of-8 from 3-point range and 13-of-14 at the line.
