Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- There is no better tonic for a team mired in a losing streak than facing the Chicago Bulls.

Michael Finley continued his strong start with 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Bradley added 17 apiece as the Mavericks snapped a five-game losing streak with a 95-83 victory over the hapless Chicago Bulls, who dropped to an NBA-worst 1-12.

Finley, who scored a season-high 35 in Wednesday's 112-100 loss at Orlando, came into the game leading the Mavericks in scoring at 22.6 points per contest.

"We had to pick up our intensity," Finley said. "I think we lost it in the first quarter and part of the second quarter and gave them life."

Nowitzki scored 11 points in the third quarter, when the Mavericks outscored the Bulls, 22-10, to turn a one-point halftime lead into a 69-56 cushion entering the final period.

"I didn't feel very well before the game and I didn't want to play at all, but it was a big game for us," Nowitzki said. "At halftime, I decided I had to do something in the second half and it worked out pretty good."

The Mavericks begin a five-game road trip on Monday against the New York Knicks.

"Winning this game before we go out on the five-games-in-seven-days road trip is big for us," Finley said. "Fortunately for us, we came out and played well enough to win tonight."

Rookie Elton Brand scored 19 points for the Bulls, who suffered their seventh straight loss since beating Boston for their only win on November 13 and fell to 0-9 on the road.

"We struggled with our turnovers in the second half," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We also struggled with the fact that we could not get ourselves back to the line. We never shot a free throw in the second half. You have to be able to get yourself back to the line."

Chicago shot just 12 free throws and committed 19 turnovers.

"Our margin for error is not great," Floyd said. "We had eight offensive fouls tonight. That's far too many."

The good news for Chicago is that it finally goes home following a nightmarish seven-game road trip during which it lost by an average of 15 points, with only three contests decided by single digits.

The Bulls were coming off Friday's 101-78 loss to the defending champion San Antonio Spurs.

"This was the second night in a row we played against a set of twin towers," Brand said. "I'm not saying they're as good as (Tim) Duncan and (David) Robinson but Bradley and Nowitzki are pretty talented and pretty athletic players."

After matching their biggest lead at 75-58 on Erick Strickland's jumper with 10:45 remaining, the Mavericks could not quite put away the Bulls. But the outcome was never in doubt as Chicago got no closer than 10 in the final minutes.

Dallas improved to 4-2 at Reunion Arena this season and posted its second straight home victory over Chicago.

The Mavericks shot 49 percent (37-of-75) from the field and made 17-of-18 from the line. Dallas was outrebounded, 43-34, but converted 19 Chicago turnovers into 18 points.

Randy Brown and rookie Dedric Willoughby scored 12 points each for the Bulls, who shot 44 percent (36-of-82). Brand made 9-of-17 shots and grabbed nine rebounds but his teammates were just a combined 27-of-65.

Brand's layup pulled Chicago within 49-48 with 11:10 remaining in the third quarter but the Bulls went scoreless for more than three minutes. After Chicago pulled within 53-50, Nowitzki's layup capped a 8-0 spurt that gave the Mavs a 61-50 cushion with 5:49 remaining in the period.

"With a team like that, who's struggling, similar to us, you don't want to give them life and confidence," Finley said. "We just wanted to put it on them right from the jump."

Dallas stretched its advantage to 69-52 on Nowitzki's jumper with 1:20 to play in the quarter before the Bulls closed to 89-79 on Kornel David's jumper with 1:57 to play.
