Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning scored 30 points and Jamal Mashburn added 16 and a career-high 10 assists as the Miami Heat held on to defeat the Washington Wizards, 89-86, for their fourth win in five games.

Miami took an 82-77 lead with 3:56 left when Mourning converted a three-point play. But Mitch Richmond's driving layup and Michael Smith's dunk off a turnover cut Miami's lead to one with 2:58 to play.

Voshon Lenard, who scored 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, sank a 22-footer to put the Heat back up by three with 2:06 remaining. Smith made two free throws to move Washington within 84-83 with 1:48 to go, but Majerle hit a 3-pointer with 1:25 to go to give Miami an 87-83 lead.

Juwan Howard was fouled by Mashburn and made 1-of-2 free throws. After Mourning missed a jumper, Richmond drove the lane but was stripped by Mashburn with 35 seconds to play.

However, Lenard turned the ball over to Washington's Reggie Jordan, who drove downcourt and cut Miami's lead to 87-86 with 10 seconds remaining.

Majerle was fouled by Smith and made 1-of-2 free throws. After a timeout, Rod Strickland missed a 15-footer with 2.9 seconds to go. Mourning grabbed the rebound and was fouled, sinking 1-of-2.

Strickland completed a miserable 1-of-9 shooting performance by missing an off-balance 25-footer at the buzzer.

"Winning is what it is all about, but I do not think that any of us are playing up to our expectations, especially at home," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We did not play well, but found a way to win."

The Heat played without star point guard Tim Hardaway, who missed the game with a jammed right knee. Replacements Anthony Carter and Rex Walters combined for six points on 1-of-8 shooting.

Richmond scored 20 points and Howard added 13 for Washington, which has lost its last five meetings with Miami.

"I thought everyone played well," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "However, I wasn't pleased with our execution down the stretch. We didn't get the shots that we wanted at the end of the game."

Miami opened a 59-50 lead in the third quarter on a layup by Brown with 7:19 to go. But Richmond scored four straight points and Isaac Austin drained a 22-footer to cut Miami's lead to three with 5:37 remaining.

Chris Whitney's 3-pointer with 3:16 to play allowed the Wizards to pull within 62-61 and Aaron Williams sank two free throws to give the Wizards their first lead of the game with 3:01 left.

Rookie Richard Hamilton's 15-footer allowed Washington to take a 67-65 lead entering the fourth quarter. It was Washington's largest lead of the game.

Mashburn scored 12 points and Mourning had 11 as Miami opened a 30-22 lead after one quarter. The Heat extended their lead to 12 in the second quarter, but Washington scored the final six points of the first half to move within 48-44.

Miami shot 47 percent (35-of-75) from the field, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range, and outrebounded Washington, 41-34. The Wizards shot 43 percent (31-of-72), including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc.
