Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd was two rebounds short of his first triple-double of the season as the Phoenix Suns extended their season-high winning streak to six games with a 94-80 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kidd had 20 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds while Tom Gugliotta scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Suns, who are riding their longest winning streak since a 10-game run from March 27-April 15, 1998.

Cliff Robinson came off the bench to add 19 points as Phoenix's reserves outscored Los Angeles' bench, 36-16. The Suns beat the Clippers for the eighth straight time and sixth in a row in Los Angeles.

Derek Anderson scored 25 points and Maurice Taylor collected 15 and eight rebounds for the Clippers, who lost their third straight game.

Los Angeles forged a 54-54 tie with 4:54 left in the third quarter on two free throws by Anderson but the Suns answered with a 12-2 run, capped by a steal by former Clipper Rodney Rogers that led to a dunk by Kidd.

"It was tied 54-54 and then I looked up and it was 64-54," said Los Angeles rookie forward Lamar Odom, who had 14 points and five rebounds. "That was the game. They're too good of a team to come back against. We gave up too many easy baskets. I take my hat off to Jason Kidd, he just controlled the game."

Tyrone Nesby hit one of two free throws and Eric Piatowski made a driving layup to move the Clippers within seven points with 26.9 second remaining in the quarter. That was the closest Los Angeles came the rest of the way as Rogers hit a free throw with 6.1 seconds left and the Suns scored the first seven points of the fourth.

Rogers finished with nine points and six rebounds for the Suns, who have not allowed more than 93 points over the last seven games. Phoenix, the third-best defensive team in the league, is holding its opponents to an average of 86.0 points over the last seven games.

"Our defense has been consistant," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "Our offense comes and goes. We wanted to push the ball. We tried to re-emphasize our running game."

The key to Phoenix' fast break has been the play of Kidd and fellow All-Star guard Penny Hardaway, who had 11 points and seven assists.

"We feed off of each other," Kidd said. "And that's what we're here to do -- push each other. And as the season goes on and on, and Penny and I get to know each other, it's going to be fun to watch. It's almost like a first date. You're trying to figure out each other and what we like to do, his tendencies. It's not going to happen in 12-13 games. It's going to take a season."

Los Angeles shot just 34.2 percent from the field, including 1-of-11 from 3-point range, but did beat the Suns at the free throw line, converting 27-of-39 shots (69.2 percent).

"I thought we played well and competitive," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "When we shoot with the low field goal percentage, how can we win? The Suns went on a run and we couldn't catch up. We're getting good looks at the baskete but just can't knock the shots down."
