Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- It wasn't nearly as easy as the first six, but the Phoenix Suns will take it.

Jason Kidd had 17 points and 11 assists in an NBA season-high 53 minutes as the red-hot Suns extended their winning streak to seven games by overcoming a 16-point second-half deficit to pull out a 128-122 double-overtime thriller over the Houston Rockets.

"That was something I wasn't planning on doing," Kidd said. "But whatever it takes to win. We were struggling a little bit. But we stayed together. We showed some character because we were down by a lot."

After outscoring their previous six opponents by an average of 18 points, the Suns needed every last basket to get past the Rockets, who played their third straight overtime game.

With Phoenix clinging to a 124-122 lead with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime, Kidd found Todd Day with a perfect feed for a layup and then hit Cliff Robinson for an uncontested dunk with 31 seconds to go that capped the scoring.

"We want to stay among the leaders in the Western Conference," Kidd added. "We have to win games like these."

Robinson scored 25 points off the bench and Penny Hardaway added 21, including the go-ahead jumper at the start of the second extra session for Phoenix, which had not won seven in a row since a 10-game run from March 27-April 15, 1998.

"Wow, that's all I can say!" Hardaway exlaimed. "We didn't get to bed until about 3:30 this morning. The Houston Rocket team was waiting for us here. They had a lot of energy and they showed it. We managed to fight back and weather the storm. There were some big plays. We hit a big shot, they hit a big shot and we couldn't pull away."

"I think in the second half we did a really good job of getting back into the game," Robinson added. "And through it all we expended a lot of energy, but we had just a little bit more down the stretch."

Kidd made 6-of-7 free throws and also grabbed eight rebounds for the Suns (11-4), who improved to 8-1 at home this season. Kidd missed a potential winning layup at the end of regulation.

Houston's Charles Barkley scored nine of his 22 points in the first overtime but committed a crucial foul with three seconds remaining that allowed Luc Longley to hit a tying free throw to send the teams into another extra session at 115-115.

Barkley argued vehemently with referee Mike Mathis after fighting with Longley for a loose ball following a missed free throw by Kelvin Cato.

"It was a tough game to lose," Barkley said. "We lost this game because of one reason, Mike Mathis. And that's it, I ain't gonna say nothing else. He's a bad official. He's been bad the whole time we've been in the league. I hate that he (bleeping) came back and he cost us this game tonight."

Phoenix forward Rodney Rogers threw Houston's Cuttino Mobley on the floor while the two fought for a rebound with the Suns clinging to a 103-102 lead in the final minute of regulation. Rogers earned a technical for tossing Mobley after a jump ball was called and was ejected for arguing with officals moments later.

Mobley drained the ensuing free throw to knot the contest with 44 seconds remaining in regulation.

Rookie Steve Francis, who sparked the Rockets to Monday's 118-110 overtime win in Vancouver, had a chance to put Houston ahead but missed an off-balance layup with 23 seconds left. The energetic point guard aggravated his twisted right ankle while landing and was forced to leave the court for the remainder of the contest.

"(Francis' ankle) is not good," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "He's probably going to miss the next game and we'll take a look at it again later."

Kidd's layup at the buzzer was defended nicely by Houston and fell well shy of the hoop.

Francis had 24 points and 10 assists and watched overtime from the bench with his ankle wrapped. Mobley scored 18 points and Shandon Anderson added 12 for the Rockets, who shot 49 percent (46-of-94) from the field and slipped to 1-2 in overtime.

Cato had a career-high 23 points for the Rockets. He hit his first eight shots from the floor to help his team build a 67-52 lead with 9:39 remaining in the third quarter. The Suns battled back, closing to 79-75 on Robinson's 3-poiner with two seconds left in the period.

Kidd's three-point play with 8:49 left in regulation forged an 88-88 tie as the teams battled back and forth thereafter.

"We've been finding ways to lose games," Tomjanovich added. "That's 10 games out of 12 that we were ahead in the fourth quater and lost. It's sad. We're not closing out games."

Day scored 15 points, Rogers 13 and rookie Shawn Marion added 10 for Phoenix, which shot 43 percent (44-of-103) and committed just 10 turnovers. The Suns scored 22 points off 19 Houston giveaways.
