Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shandon Anderson scored a career-high 27 points and Charles Barkley, $20,000 poorer after being fined earlier in the day, just missed a triple-double as the Houston Rockets posted a 109-106 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Anderson made 10-of-18 shots, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range, as he eclipsed his previous high of 26 points, set against the Toronto Raptors on March 3, 1998 with Utah. He added six rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocked shots.

"I was just out there playing, having fun," Anderson said. "We got off to a good start and that was important."

"Shannon played terrific," Barkley added. "That's the best game he has had all season. He's better because they helped him a couple of times by double-teaming me. He hit some 3s to get started and when he gets the ball in the open court he is terrific."

Barkley was fined for his comments about officiating following Wednesday's double-overtime loss in Phoenix. Despite playing 48 minutes in that contest, the 36-year-old came back tonight with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists while playing only three quarters.

"We played well tonight and they did not play well," Barkley added. "They didn't compete against us. It was pretty easy. We've got a good team."

After tying an NBA record by playing three straight overtime contests, the Rockets tired late in the game tonight and nearly surrendered a fourth-quarter lead. But a 12-0 burst three minutes into the final period sealed the victory.

Derek Anderson led the Clippers with 23 points and rookie Lamar Odom added 22 and eight rebounds.

The Clippers, who have dropped four straight, got within 84-81 with 9:07 left following two free throws by Odom. Houston's Kelvin Cato hit a seven-footer 15 seconds later and Cuttino Mobley converted a three-point play with 8:10 to go to give the Rockets an 89-81 lead.

Mobley blocked a shot on the defensive end and fed Kenny Thomas for a breakaway dunk. Bryce Drew buried a 3-pointer for a 13-point lead before Mobley capped the burst with two free throws to make it 96-81 with 6:23 remaining.

The Clippers never got within 11 points thereafter.

Los Angeles shot 47 percent (36-of-76) from the floor but made just 1-of-9 3-point shots and committed 22 turnovers. The Clippers also managed to record only nine assists on 36 baskets.

"Our shooting percentage continues to improve," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "However, their shooting was good too and they had less turnovers than us and converted on ours."

"It's frustrating," Clippers center Michael Olowokandi added. "It's not really working out. You gotta get together and dig deep inside and figure something out."

Odom agreed the losing is becoming contagious.

"I think the team is feeling frustrated because everybody here is competitive or they wouldn't be here at this level," he said.

Houston made 9-of-17 3-point attempts but was just 24-of-35 from the free throw line.
