Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Dee Brown's 3-pointer with one second left gave the Toronto Raptors a 95-93 victory over the Washington Wizards as both teams blew big fourth-quarter leads.

After a wild sequence that saw Toronto nearly turn it over and call consecutive timeouts, Brown came around a high screen, took the inbounds pass from Tracy McGrady and made a wide-open 3-pointer, the first of the second half for the Raptors.

"I'm happy I played now," Brown said. "I wasn't going to play, but my knee felt better as the last couple of days went on. Butch (coach Butch Carter) ran a play for me. He had confidence for me to take the shots. (Charles) Oakley set a good pick and T-Mac (McGrady) gave me a great pass."

"Vince (Carter) was the first option of course, but I really couldn't see him," McGrady said. "I saw Dee, gave him the ball and he knocked down the shot. I was praying as the ball went up. It's just good to come out and get the win."

Washington's Mitch Richmond, who almost came up with a steal seconds earlier, attempted a long 3-pointer that referees waved off, sending the Wizards to their fourth loss in five games.

"It was a tough loss," Richmond said. "I thought we definitely had this one. Three-point-two seconds left in the game and Dee gets a wide-open 3. It's really a back-breaker to have an outcome like that."

Brown rescued the Raptors, who squandered a nine-point cushion early in the period, then rallied from a six-point deficit in the last two minutes. Vince Carter scored 23 points and McGrady added 21 for Toronto, which bounced back from its worst loss of the season.

Consecutive baskets by Juwan Howard gave Washington a 91-85 lead before the Raptors rallied. Antonio Davis made a three-point play and McGrady scored, cutting the deficit to one with 1:14 to go. Rod Strickland made a layup but Carter answered with a jumper with 43 seconds remaining.

After Howard missed a jumper, Carter had his drive knocked out of bounds with five seconds left. Richmond stepped in front of an inbounds pass but fell out of bounds with 3.2 seconds to go and Toronto called two straight timeouts as McGrady had trouble finding an open man.

"You dream about situations where you can make a shot to give your team a win," Brown said. "I'm just glad I got a good look and an opportunity to get a good shot off. I was surprised I got that open. I had time, if I wanted to, to take a dribble."

"I thought we really got screwed on a few calls down the stretch," Wizards coach Gar Heard said. "There was an inbounds, there was a five-second call that wasn't called. Mitch got pushed out of bounds, that wasn't called. What are we supposed to do? Stop them all night until they score?"

Richmond scored 18 points and Strickland added 16 and 12 assists for the Wizards, who lost center Isaac Austin to a broken nose midway through the first period. Austin was elbowed by teammate Michael Smith as Smith grabbed a rebound and was hospitalized for further observation.

Toronto led 73-65 after three quarters and opened a 75-66 bulge on a basket by Kevin Willis with 11:17 left. Washington fought back and a 3-pointer by Tracy Murray gave the Wizards an 85-83 edge with 4:21 to go.

Davis scored 15 points and Willis added 12 for the Raptors, who shot 44 percent (36-of-82) from the field and committed just nine turnovers. Toronto avenged a 91-82 setback at Washington on November 18.

Howard scored 15 points and Smith added 11 and 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 45 percent (37-of-82) and held a 48-40 rebounding advantage.

Carter scored 12 points in the first quarter as the Raptors raced to a 32-25 lead. They led by as many as 17 points in the second quarter before settling for a 53-40 halftime advantage.
