Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell's critics will now start saying he is passing too much.

Cassell handed out a career-high 18 assists and scored 16 points as the Milwaukee Bucks cruised to a 103-97 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, who were denied their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Despite owning a pair of NBA championship rings from his days with the Houston Rockets, Cassell often has been criticized for shooting too much as a point guard, specifically while with the New Jersey Nets.

Now with his fifth team, Cassell seems to have found the niche that has been missing since his stint with Houston. He notched at least 12 assists for the third time in the last five games, including 15 at Chicago on Saturday.

"We have a lot of guys that can shoot the ball," Cassell said. "It makes it easy when I am hitting my shots. That opens it for them and then we are hard to stop."

"Sam was fantastic tonight," Bucks coach George Karl said. "He really played a fantastic floor game."

Ray Allen scored 20 points and Glenn Robinson added 17 for the Bucks, who never trailed and have won six straight meetings with the Mavericks.

Michael Finley scored 29 points for Dallas, which trailed by as many as 21 points and was denied its first three-game winning streak since April 26-May 1 of last season.

"It was game we could have definitely won," said Finley, who played collegiately at Wisconsin. "But we started out slow."

"We weren't competitive enough," said Mavs coach Don Nelson, who coached the Bucks for many years. "Not one starter had a good game. I was happy with the way the bench came into the game and got us back in."

Nelson may have been exaggerating, but the starting frontcourt of Shawn Bradley, Dirk Nowitzki and Cedric Ceballos shot a combined 7-of-30, with the 7-6 Bradley missing all eight of his shots.

Allen and Robinson scored seven points each in the first quarter as Milwaukee jumped to a 24-16 lead. Dallas closed to 28-23 on Finley's 3-pointer before the Bucks went on a 17-2 run.

Seven different Milwaukee players scored and Cassell handed out four assists before his layup made it 45-25 with six minutes to go in the first half.

"I got the guys the ball tonight and they put it in the basket," Cassell said.

The Mavericks closed to 53-42 at halftime and two free throws by Nowitzki cut the deficit to 69-61 with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter.

But Cassell made a layup and jumper around a basket by teammate Ervin Johnson as the Bucks took a 75-61 lead to the final period. Johnson opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play and Tim Thomas scored to make it 80-61 with 11:17 remaining.

Nelson went to his bench and got a big game out of recently signed Damon Jones, who scored 18 points. But Dallas got no closer than the final margin.

"We're still young and learning," Cassell said. "We need to keep on working to play a full 48 minutes. When we do that, we'll put teams away."

"If we would've had two more minutes, maybe we could have pulled it out," Jones said. "When you get down like that, it's hard to come back."

Johnson scored a season-high 15 points for Milwaukee, which shot 49 percent (42-of-85) from the field and made 17-of-19 free throws. Thomas scored 13 points.

"We have to find that fourth and fifth man," Allen said. "It's great for me to know Ervin will give us that output. It gives me confidence to know we have someone else capable."

Hubert Davis also scored 18 points and Nowitzki added 13 and 10 rebounds for Dallas, which was without injured point guards Robert Pack and Steve Nash and shot 41 percent (33-of-81).
