Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Derrick Coleman scored a season-high 26 points and Elden Campbell scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Charlotte Hornets handed the Seattle SuperSonics their second straight home defeat with a 103-81 win.

Vernon Maxwell made 1-of-2 free throws to cut Charlotte's lead to 76-66 with 11:04 to go. But the Hornets went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:20 as Campbell scored five consecutive points. Rookie Baron Davis' driving layup extended the lead to 85-66 with 8:44 remaining.

"We have a chance to be a great team," said Coleman, who added four blocked shots. "We just have to keep continuing to work night in, night out. Most of all, we just have to establish ourselves as a good road team."

Rookie Eddie Robinson added 18 points for Charlotte, which went 2-2 on a four-game West Coast trip but is 3-6 overall on the road.

Gary Payton led Seattle with 17 points and Maxwell, Vin Baker and Jelani McCoy added 12 apiece.

Affected by the World Trade Organization protests which took place earlier this week outside KeyArena, the SuperSonics had won their first six home games before suffering a home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

Seattle shot just 34 percent (30-of-87) from the field, including 7-of-26 from 3-point range, in losing for only the second time in six games and the third time in 11 games.

"You can't exaggerate. It was a horrible exhibition," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "They whipped us every way you can whip a team, and they deserved to win and we deserved to lose."

The Sonics played without leading rebounder Horace Grant, who missed the game with a sprained knee. Charlotte shot 48 percent (42-of-87) and outrebounded Seattle, 54-42.

Todd Fuller's layup completed a 6-0 burst to extend Charlotte's advantage to 75-58 with 2:19 remaining. But Seattle went on a 7-0 run to close out the quarter as Greg Foster hit a 22-footer, Maxwell drained a 3-pointer and Payton sank two free throws with 2.1 seconds to play.

Despite Seattle's poor shooting in the first quarter, Charlotte led only 25-24 as Coleman scored nine points. The Sonics shot only 29 percent (8-of-27).

"They missed a lot of good open shots," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "A lot of those shots they were missing that normally go in. If they do go in, it's a different ballgame."

Brent Barry's layup with 55 seconds left in the second quarter tied it at 44-44, but the Hornets scored the final five points of the period as Coleman converted on a three-point play and Robinson added a dunk with 12 seconds remaining.
