Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 12 straight points down the stretch for the Vancouver Grizzlies but refused to shoot with the game on the line.

Abdur-Rahim deferred to Othella Harrington, who was unable to tie the contest from the foul line with 6.2 seconds remaining as the Grizzlies suffered their 11th straight loss, 102-99 to the Houston Rockets.

Trailing 100-98, Vancouver was given new life with 17 seconds remaining when Houston's Walt Williams, who nailed a key 3-pointer moments earlier, was whistled for a five-second violation while trying to inbound.

The Grizzlies worked the ball to Abdur-Rahim on the left block, who opted against a hook shot or spin move and dumped the ball underneath to Harrington. The former Rocket was fouled but missed his first attempt.

"We thought Shareef would get doubled-teamed and we had our 3-point shooters on the floor," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "Othella knows that when they double team Shareef to dive to the rim. Shareef saw that Othella was open and made the pass to him. He just didn't make the free throws."

"I had a chance to win the game and I blew it," said Harrington, who had 18 points and seven rebounds. "It's tough. First I couldn't finish the three-point play and then I missed the free throw. I can't believe it."

Harrington came to Vancouver as part of the blockbuster deal for second overall pick, point guard Steve Francis, who missed his third straight game tonight with an injured left ankle.

Cuttino Mobley made two free throws for the Rockets with five seconds to play as they sealed their ninth straight victory over Vancouver. Houston also secured its first three-game winning streak of the season.

"We were lucky. Othella had a tremendous game," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "This was a dangerous situation for us tonight."

The Rockets, who won a game decided by three points or less for the first time this season, improved to 9-0 against the Grizzlies at home and are 16-2 all-time vs. Vancouver.

Abdur-Rahim finished with 24 points and Harrington scored 18 for the Grizzlies, who suffered their 30th consecutive road loss.

"The guys might be reaching a frustration point," Hill added. "You have to wonder how much you can bend before you break, but this is what life is all about. The guys are still playing hard, we're just not catching any breaks."

After being forced to the bench early due to foul trouble, Abdur-Rahim, who scored 24 points, helped the Grizzlies rally from a 12-point third quarter deficit and his dunk off a baseline drive put Vancouver on top, 96-95 with 2:12 left.

"It was a situation where I wanted the ball to come to me," Abdur-Rahim said. "We were at the point in the game where we needed some baskets and I have the confidence to do it. We just fell a little short tonight."

But the Rockets regained the lead as Cuttino Mobley threw up an acrobatic shot in the lane with 1:47 to play.

"When I get the chance to put the ball in the basket, I'm going to do it," said Mobley, who came off the bench to score 13 points in 30 minutes.

"It's one of those what the ... oh, good move," Tomjanovich said of Mobley's basket.

Abdur-Rahim missed a short hook shot on the ensuing possession and Williams gave the Rockets a 100-96 advantage by draining a 3-pointer from the right wing.

After Abdur-Rahim's hook cut the deficit in half, Williams again attempted a 3-pointer that bounced off the back of the rim but was rebounded by Charles Barkley. Bryce Drew was fouled with 17 seconds to left, but it was just the fourth team foul on the Grizzlies and Houston was forced to inbound following a timeout.

"We hung in there tonight," said Barkley, who led the Rockets with 25 points and 11 rebounds. "The objective of the game is to win. "We've been playing well the last two weeks and we had a good effort tonight. We have to build upon it on the upcoming road trip."

The Rockets, who begin a three-game Road trip on Wednesday at Philadelphia, connected on 47 percent (38-of-81) of their field goals and went 21-of-31 from the foul line. Carlos Rogers scored a season-high 18 points off the bench for Houston.

"Thank goodness we got Abdur-Rahim in foul trouble early and that kept his minutes down," Tomjanovich said. "He was in a real zone in the fourth quarter."

Michael Dickerson scored 17 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 48 percent (38-of-79) and were 8-of-24 from beyond the arc.

The teams battled to a 40-40 deadlock on the boards and each committed 13 turnovers.
