Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat had something to say about the dominance of the Western Conference.

Jamal Mashburn scored six of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and Dan Majerle's 10,000th career point helped seal the Heat's 86-76 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers in a battle of the top teams in each conference.

Although there clearly are more powerful teams in the Western Conference, the Heat (14-4) have been atop the East nearly all season. Without injured starting point guard Tim Hardaway, they knocked off the West's best team on its own floor, holding the Trail Blazers to a season low in points.

Alonzo Mourning scored 17 points and Anthony Carter continued to play well in Hardaway's absence with 14. The win was the sixth in seven games for the Heat, who are 2-1 on a six-game road trip.

"We just kept working at it real hard tonight," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Portland has a great record, and it is a great team. When you come in here, you know you have to play your best to win."

"It always feels good to go in anywhere and get a win, regardless of who you played. But this was big," Mourning added. "We had a collective effort from every guy who came off the bench and did what we needed to win. We matched their effort and made a lot of hustle plays."

Greg Anthony scored 19 points and Rasheed Wallace added 14 for Portland, which is 2-3 after a 13-2 start.

"Give credit to Miami. They physically kicked our butts," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "They got after loose balls, they defended us aggressively and they kept us from executing."

"It's tough," said Blazers forward Brian Grant, who was 4-of-12 from the field. "We have got to find ourselves. We are a team right now that is just getting by here and there but against real talented teams like Miami, who are physical and sharp and mentally there, it's going to be hard."

The Trail Blazers were within 71-67 with 8:29 to go, but Mourning hit two free throws and a 20-footer to push the lead to eight points with 5:26 left. Anthony made a technical free throw with 4:34 remaining but Voshon Lenard buried a 3-pointer to push the lead to double digits.

Anthony sank a 15-footer with 53 seconds left to get Portland within 82-76 but Majerle sank two free throws to reach the 10,000-point plateau. The Trail Blazers did not score again.

"It's a big milestone in this league and means I've hung around for a while and had some success," Majerle said.

"They worked harder," Anthony said. "They were more physical. They wanted it more tonight and it showed. They beat us in all the hustle categories."

The first quarter featured six ties and neither team led by more than four points. The game was tied, 27-27, when Clarence Weatherspoon hit consecutive baskets to put the Heat ahead. P.J. Brown nailed a 13-footer and Lenard followed with a 16-footer to push the lead to eight.

The Heat took a 47-43 edge into the half and maintained at least a two-point lead for the entire third quarter.
