Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone and the Utah Jazz squandered an 11-point fourth-quarter lead before remembering who they were hosting.

Malone scored 29 points and sparked a decisive game-ending run as the Jazz rallied for their 25th consecutive home win over the Dallas Mavericks, 85-79.

The Jazz have not lost to the Mavericks at home since February 2, 1989 and have won 10 straight overall in the series. But that streak appeared in jeopardy when Dallas opened the fourth quarter with a 20-6 run, taking a 71-68 lead with 6:29 to play.

Malone, who was 13-of-24 from the field with 10 rebounds, fired the Jazz back up with a 21-footer that cut the deficit to one before Bryon Russell's layup put them ahead for good, 72-71, with 5:33 left.

"I don't think I want to look at it like I'm carrying the team," Malone said. "I'm playing more minutes and they are calling more plays for me here early and stuff like that. I just want to win and it don't really matter who we play. I just want to win 'cause losing is no fun."

"To me, it was the Karl Malone jump shot when we had the clock running down, up three (that killed us)," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "That jump shot that he made hurt us as much as anything."

John Stockton had 11 points, seven assists and gave Utah a four-point cushion when he sank a 3-pointer on the ensuing trip with 4:30 remaining. Russell had 13 points and Jeff Hornacek 11 for Utah, which has won three in a row for the first time this season.

Cedric Ceballos scored 19 points off the bench and second-year forward Dirk Nowitzki added 15 for Dallas, which has lost three straight and slipped to 3-11 on the road.

Utah improved to 44-7 all-time at home against the Mavs.

"Everybody's 0-20 here," Dallas center Sean Rooks said. "Not too many people come to Salt Lake City and get wins."

Shawn Bradley scored 12 points and Michael Finley had 11, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Dallas, which managed only 11 third-quarter points to fall behind 62-51.

"Jazz is good at taking care of business at home," Bradley said. "A lot of teams look up to them in this league. We haven't figured it out. If we knew (how to win here), I think we would have done it by now."

Ceballos came out on fire in the fourth quarter, burying back-to-back jumpers and a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to six. Nowitzki followed with a 25-footer that made it 66-63 with 9:22 to play, prompting Utah coach Jerry Sloan to call a timeout.

"They really made a game out of it," Stockton said. "I think everybody was kind of going through the motions on both teams through a large part of the game and then Ceballos really got going for them and woke everybody up on both sides. And it was a much better game in the fourth quarter."

Malone and Ceballos traded layups before Finley hit a 13-footer to cut the deficit to one. Ceballos dunked and Hubert Davis buried a 21-footer to put Dallas in front, 71-70, with 6:29 remaining.

Malone's ensuing 17-footer sparked a closing 17-8 burst for Utah, which improved to 20-0 against Dallas at the Delta Center.

The Jazz shot 45 percent (36-of-80) and held a 49-36 advantage on the boards.
