Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards were scorched by the hot-shooting Phoenix Suns.

Cliff Robinson scored a season-high 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting and Tom Gugliotta added a season-high 27 on 13-of-17 from the field as undermanned Phoenix extended the Wizards' losing streak to six games with a 99-85 victory.

After shooting a blistering 64 percent (35-of-55) over the first three quarters, Phoenix made only 6-of-24 shots in the fourth to finish at 52 percent (41-of-79) for the game. The Suns improved to 10-0 this season when holding opponents under 100 points and are 9-1 against Eastern Conference foes.

"We played good for three quarters. The fourth quarter was a little sloppy," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "They (Robinson and Gugliotta) took advatnage of what was given to them. We moved the ball well and made some nice passes to get to them."

Washington has dropped eight of its last nine games and is 0-3 on its four-game road trip, falling to 2-9 away from home this season. The Wizards have lost 19 of the last 21 games meetings with Phoenix dating back to the 1987-88 season.

"We let two guys get 58 points on us, and they've been struggling all year," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "They had a bigger heart than we did tonight. If we want to be a mediocre team and just go out and play, they have to let me know. Then I'll play the kids on the bench and at least I'll get effort and energy."

Juwan Howard scored 15 points and Mitch Richmond added 14 for Washington.

The Suns played without starting center Luc Longley, who has back spasms, and starting guard Penny Hardaway, who remains sidelined with plantar fasciaitis.

Robinson and Gugliotta each scored 20 points in the first half to outscore the entire Washington team. The Suns shot 61 percent (22-of-36) from outside to take a 53-37 lead at halftime.

"We don't know the answer," Richmond said. "We came out flat and they did anything they wanted to. They were taking turns at us."

Howard's six-footer cut the Suns' lead to 58-43 with 9:57 to go in the third quarter. But Phoenix went on an 11-3 run over the next 2:56 as Jason Kidd scored seven of his nine points and Robinson's layup gave the Suns a 69-46 lead with 7:01 remaining.

Phoenix moved out to a 74-50 lead on a 3-pointer by Rex Chapman with 5:29 to play.

The Wizards shot 42 percent (33-of-78) and made just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. Washington was just 18-of-33 at the line.
