Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic's rebuilding plan is doing a lot better than the Chicago Bulls' rebuilding plan.

With veterans surrounding their rookies, the Magic again used a balanced attack to pull away for a 108-87 victory over the Bulls, who have lost 11 of their last 12 games.

Darrell Armstrong, Monty Williams, Pat Garrity, Michael Doleac and future cornerstone Corey Maggette scored 16 points apiece for the Magic, who spent the offseason unloading their stars to create salary cap room that could help them land a free agent.

It is hard to tell the Magic are rebuilding. They climbed back to .500 (10-10) and appear to have enough to contend for a playoff berth.

Ron Artest scored 20 points and Elton Brand added 16 for the Bulls, who have surrounded their rookies with more rookies. Artest and Brand are two of five first-year players on Chicago, which is 15-53 since the breakup of the dynasty that won six NBA titles in eight years.

"We're doing it differently than they are," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "Next year. we will have a lot of guys here, core guys. We don't need a lot of guys. And we have three draft picks next year where Chicago only has one."

"They're a good team and have a lot of bodies," Artest said. "A lot of bodies."

A 3-pointer by Corey Benjamin, who scored 15 points, pulled the Bulls within 66-64 with 7:26 left in the third quarter before the Magic responded with a 15-5 run featuring seven points from Armstrong and six from Williams. A 3-pointer by Armstrong gave Orlando an 81-69 lead with 3:51 to go.

The Magic led 87-75 entering the final period and the Bulls never made a charge. Two free throws by John Aamaechi widened the advantage to 94-77 with 8:27 remaining and Orlando cruised to the win, allowing Chicago just 12 points in the quarter.

"I thought their energy bothered us," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We ran out of gas with nine minutes to go in the game, started to come up short on a lot of shots, could not change ends of the floor at that point in the game."

Amaechi scored 11 points for the Magic, who shot 49 percent (40-of-82) from the field and made 24-of-27 free throws. Amaechi and Maggette grabbed eight rebounds each and Armstrong handed out eight assists.

This was the first meeting between Maggette and Brand, who were teammates at Duke last season before leaving college early for the NBA draft.

"He's one my best friends," Maggette said. "When we talk, we always tell each other to keep our heads up. You've got to do that. Right now, they're going through a losing process and we're playing well but you never know what's going to happen."

"He really stepped his game up tonight, played very well," Brand said. "It's special to hook up against him. They got the best of us tonight but we'll see them again next week."

Artest scored 11 points in the first quarter as Chicago opened a 26-20 lead. Maggette scored 10 points in the second quarter as Orlando rallied for a 56-52 halftime lead.

Chicago shot 43 percent (32-of-75) and committed 18 turnovers.
