Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Ruben Patterson scored nine of his 16 points during a 14-0 run that began the second half and propelled the Seattle SuperSonics to an easy 109-84 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Patterson's outburst allowed Seattle to turn a 10-point halftime advantage into a 64-40 bulge with 9:04 remaining in the third quarter. He began the spurt with a three-point play 25 seconds into the half and capped it with a layup.

The Nuggets did not get closer than 22 points thereafter. Seattle led by as many as 32 midway through the fourth quarter.

"It was a great win," Patterson said. "They came out and jumped on us early but we came back. We just got back on defense. When we first started they were beating us in transition."

Gary Payton netted 25 points, including a 3-pointer during the pivotal burst, and Rashard Lewis contributed 13 for Seattle, which won its 13th straight home game over Denver and its third in a row overall at KeyArena.

"We just knew we had to keep pressuring them," Payton said. "We had to keep running and we did a good job of that. They are a good team. They weren't making shots. They weren't aggressive."

"Everybody in the NBA is a good team," Patterson said. "We can't take anybody for granted."

Raef LaFrentz scored 15 points and Antonio McDyess 14 for the Nuggets, who concluded their road trip at 3-3. Denver guard Nick Van Exel, who came in averaging nearly 17 points per game, was held to just four on 2-of-10 shooting.

"Nick was trying to get them in their offense but he wasn't as aggressive as he usually is and we tried to take advantage of that," Payton said.

Denver also played without forward George McCloud, who is sidelined with a sprained right thumb.

"I thought we took their defense off the hook by shooting quick outside jump shots," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said.

A layup by Seatte's Jelani McCoy ignited a 22-12 first-half closing run that put Seattle on top, 50-40. Payton scored 10 points during the run and McCoy added six of his nine.

The Sonics then put the contest away in the opening stages of the third quarter.

Following Patterson's three-point play, Payton drilled a 3-pointer that gave Seattle a 16-point lead. Petterson threw down consecutive dunks off feeds from Brent Barry and Payton and Horace Grant's 16-foot jumper made it a 22-point contest.

Patterson's layup off a pass from Grant turned the game into a laugher.

Vin Baker had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Sonics, who shot 51 percent (44-of-87), including 6-of-21 from beyond the arc, and held a 49-44 advantage on the boards.

Antonio McDyess had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Denver before leaving midway through the third quarter with back spasms.

"He was the only one who was taking the ball to the basket," Issel said of McDyess. "We were shooting jump shots and only shooting 35 percent and it got pretty nasty after that. You have to attack the basket, especially against a team like Seattle that doesn't have a lot of shot blockers inside."

The Nuggets connected on 34.5 percent (29-of-84) of their shots, were a miserable 3-of-17 from 3-point range and committed 19 turnovers that led to 24 Seattle points.

"We just have to forget about this game and move on," McDyess said. "This one didn't help us at all. For six or seven minutes we played well. They put us in a half-court trap and that hurt us."
