Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 27 points and Howard Eisley added 15, including seven in a decisive fourth-quarter run, as the Utah Jazz extended their season-high winning streak to seven games with a 96-86 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Utah led 67-63 after three quarters and opened the fourth period with a 15-4 run. Eisley sank two free throws as the Jazz moved out to a 82-67 advantage with 7:09 to play.

The Jazz have won 14 straight games against the Celtics, dating to a 112-101 loss in Boston on December 20, 1991.

"We were succcessful when we slowed it down and played the game to our pace," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We don't have a lot of 1-on-1 players, maybe Karl Malone is our only guy. But when we play as a team and control the tempo, that's when we are at our best."

Antoine Walker, picking up the slack for injured leading scorer Paul Pierce, poured in a season-high 36 points on 13-of-23 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Celtics (10-11) fell under .500 for the first time this season.

Utah moved out to its largest lead of the game when Malone sank two free throws with 4:04 remaining to extend the cushion to 94-75. The Celtics got no closer than the final margin.

"We did the best we could tonight," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We're not going to stand here and make excuses for our injuries. They just played the better game in the fourth quarter."

The Jazz shot 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field, including 7-of-11 in the fourth quarter.

Utah's bench outscored Boston's reserves, 30-11, as rookie Quincy Lewis scored seven points and Jacque Vaughn and Greg Ostertag contributed four apiece to go along with Eisley's 15.

"I can't say enough about the job our second unit did tonight," Malone said. "That was probably the biggest reason we came out on top. When we get contributions like we did tonight off the bench there's no one in the league we can't beat."

Utah took a 56-44 lead on a 3-pointer by Jeff Hornacek with 7:19 remaining in the third quarter. After a driving layup by Hornacek gave Utah a 67-57 lead with 1:04 left, Boston scored the final six points of the quarter on four free throws by Eric Williams and a driving layup by Adrian Griffin.

"We made some careless mistakes at the end of the third quarter to let them back in it," Malone said. "But then again, we know every team in the NBA, especially on its home court, is going to make a run, and that's what they did. We just held them off in the fourth quarter."

Walker scored 11 points in the first quarter as Boston took a 21-17 lead. But the Jazz shot 11-of-21 in the second quarter to take a 40-35 into the intermission. Boston made only 28 percent (5-of-18) of its shots in the second quarter.
