Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- It did not take long for Reggie Miller to rediscover his shooting touch.

Coming off a terrible game, Miller scored 11 of his 18 points in the first quarter as the Indiana Pacers took early control and cruised to a 102-91 victory over the woeful Chicago Bulls.

Miller had averaged 24 points per game in his last five contests prior to Tuesday's loss in Toronto, where he shot 1-of-8 from the field and scored just six points. It took him just 10 minutes to surpass that total against the Bulls.

After making his first two shots, Miller cooled off a bit before powering an 11-2 surge late in the first quarter with a running jumper with 1:52 to go and a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left that gave Indiana a 34-22 lead.

"I thought Reggie did a lot of good things," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "He was active defensively. I thought he played pretty well tonight."

Miller shot 4-of-5 in the period and 5-of-10 overall. He also was 6-of-6 from the line as Indiana led by at least double digits over the final three quarters and won for the seventh time in eight games.

Austin Croshere scored a career-high 21 points and Rik Smits added 19 for the Pacers, who are 4-0 against the Bulls since superstar Michael Jordan retired prior to last season.

"I just came out and played hard and got the ball in good scoring position," said Croshere, who established a career high for the second straight game. "It's good to get another game as soon as possible after a tough loss."

"It was important for us to get back here and win tonight," Smits said. "It really didn't matter who we were playing; we just needed to establish ourselves and get the `W.'"

Rookie Dedric Willoughby scored 21 points and handed out eight assists for the Bulls, who have lost two in a row and 12 of 13. Chicago is off to the worst start in franchise history at 2-17.

In addition, the Bulls fell to 0-12 away from home, matching the longest road skid in club annals. They also lost 12 straight road games from January 2-February 27, 1985 and from March 24-April 30, 1999.

"One of these days we will sneak up on someone on the road," Willoughby said.

The run continued in the second quarter as Indiana scored the first six points for a 40-22 lead. Chicago trailed by as much as 20 points before cutting the deficit to 55-43 on a driving layup by Corey Benjamin 1:03 before halftime.

The Bulls had a chance to get closer but Miller broke up a fast break by stealing a pass that led to a layup by Croshere. After another turnover by the Bulls, Mark Jackson threw in a running 3-pointer at the horn for a 60-43 advantage.

Smits scored eight points and Miller seven as the Pacers took an 82-65 lead into the final period. The Bulls cut the deficit to 11 points before a 3-pointer by Sam Perkins capped a 7-0 burst and gave Indiana a 93-75 lead with 6:05 to go.

Jalen Rose scored 13 points for the Pacers, who shot 43 percent (34-of-79), made 25-of-28 free throws and held a 40-37 edge in rebounds.

Benjamin and rookie Elton Brand scored 16 points apiece for the Bulls, who shot 49 percent (40-of-82) and made 8-of-12 from the line.

"I think our rookies are getting more minutes than most rookies in the league, which is helping them to get better," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "Even when we were 20 points down, they still tried to play as opposed to just trying to get numbers."
